Ukraine to increase its peacekeeping troops in Ivory Coast

Ukraine intends to increase its peacekeeping contingent in Cote d'Ivoire through transferring some of its peacekeepers from Liberia, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has said.
The issue of enhancing Ukraine's peacekeeping contingent in the UN mission in Ivory Coast is being considered at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) on Wednesday.
Opening the meeting of the NSDC on Wednesday, Yanukovych recalled that on January 19, 2011, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution to reinforce its peacekeeping mission in Côte d'Ivoire. In this regard, the UN Secretariat sent an official request to Ukraine, and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon personally asked Ukraine, which is a contributor to the security in the region, to increase their support for the UN peacekeeping operation.
Yanukovych said he was confident that increasing the number of Ukrainian peacekeepers in Ivory Coast was in Ukraine's national interests and will strengthen the country's international authority.
"Taking into account that we will carry out a peacekeeping mission in West Africa and are planning to increase Ukraine's economic presence, which constitutes our national interest on the African continent, I am sure that our decision to strengthen the support for the UN peacekeeping mission in Cote d'Ivoire meets national interests and significantly strengthens Ukraine's position in the international arena," he said.
"Two Mi-8MT military helicopters and their crews continue to perform peacekeeping functions in Côte d'Ivoire, and another three Mi-24 attack helicopters with their crews will be transferred there from the UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia," Yanukovych said.
