USA Africa Dialogue Series - The Cost of Living: A Play by Sefi Atta

The Cost of Living, a play

Terra Kulture is pleased to announce that The Cost of Living will premiere on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 3pm and 6pm and will be performed thereafter every Sunday in March 2011 at the same times. 

Written by Sefi Atta and directed by Nick Monu, The Cost of Living is a one-act play about a bungled kidnapping during which an American hostage and his Nigerian abductor learn about the value of life.

The cast and crew include actors Frank Adekunle Macaulay and Toyin Oshinaike, costume and set designer Simone Monu, and assistant director Bayo Abifarin.

The Cost of Living is produced by Terra Kulture, Sefi Atta and Monu and Monu Productions, and is sponsored by Guaranty Trust Bank and Murtala Muhammed Foundation. Stage props are provided by Julius Berger Nigeria and promotional support is provided by Sesema PR.

Sefi Atta – Writer

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, trained as a chartered accountant in England and as a CPA in the United States. She is the author of Everything Good Will ComeSwallow and News From Home. Her radio plays have been broadcast by the BBC and her first play, The Engagement, was staged at MUSON in 2005. She is the winner of the inaugural Wole Soyinka Prize for Literature in Africa in 2006 and the Noma Award for Publishing in Africa in 2009. She lives in Meridian, Mississippi with her husband Gboyega Ransome-Kuti and their daughter Temi.

Nick Monu – Director

Born in Lagos, Nigeria, trained at the American University in Washington DC and Webber Douglas in London. He has worked for more than 20 years in the area of film, gathering experience in producing, directing and acting. He worked in all major houses in the UK, including Royal Shakespeare Company, National Theatre, The Royal Court, The Globe Theatre, Manchester Exchange, BBC and ITV. He was nominated as one of England's most promising young actors in 1989 and joined Germany's and Austria's most prestigious theatre ensembles (Schaubühne and the Burgtheater). In 2008 he moved to Lagos to direct Wole Soyinka's play The Swamp Dwellers. He also initiated a series of training programmes funded by an Austrian-based NGO (of which he is chairman) and other institutions such as Goethe-Institut Nigeria. As a freelance actor he continually performs in European film/theatre and cinema productions and will direct Sefi Atta's first play, The Sentence, in Germany in October 2011.

Simone Monu – Set and Costume Designer

Born in Austria, trained in fashion design in Austria and set and costume design at Chelsea College of Art & Design and London College of Fashion. After working for more than 12 years in the areas of film, theatre and opera she trained for film editing, special effects and web design. She has worked as a set and costume designer for Europe's most recognised opera and theatre houses (Vienna State Opera, Covent Garden of London, Salzburg Opera Festival, Burgtheater Vienna) and for the National Theatre of Nigeria's production of The Swamp Dwellers in 2009. Over the past 4 years she has edited various short films, documentaries and music videos for Monu & Monu Film. She is the financial administrator of an Austrian-based NGO that cooperates through training programmes with Nigerian based institutions such as Goethe-Institut Nigeria and Freedom Foundation Nigeria. She and her husband are launching the fashion label Monu & Monu Fashion this year, through which she expresses her love for Nigerian and African textiles especially Aso-Oke, other African strip-cloths and of course, as an Austrian national, Austrian lace.

Frank Adekunle Macaulay – Actor

Born in England, studied acting at Anna Scher Theatre, London and completed courses in film, TV, and video production at London College of Communication, Elephant and Castle, as well as The Film & Video Workshop, Hungerford Road, London. He has experience as a director of photography, lighting, cameraman, 2nd camera, soundman, 1st assistant director, editor, producer and actor on various films, documentaries, commercials and corporate videos.

Toyin Oshinaike – Actor

Started professional acting in Nigeria two decades ago. He is an actor, poet and theatre director trained on the job. He received a NANTAP award for his outstanding contribution to the development of theatre in Nigeria. He has toured the USA, UK, France and Germany with various plays. Having worked with many notable directors in Nigeria some of the most recognised projects were Things Fall Apart, directed by Chuck Mike (1999), The Gods Are Not To Blame by Ola Rotimi and directed by Professor Niyi Coker (2005), The Lion and The Jewel by Wole Soyinka and directed by Chuck Mike (2005), The Voyage written and directed by Ojo Bakare (2006/07), Woza Albert! directed by Niji Akanni, Hard Ground by Ahmed Yerima (2006 NLNG Award), Home Sweet Home written and directed by Bisi Adigun (2010) and Yeepa, Solarin Nbo! by Femi Osofisan and directed by Niji Akanni (2010).

Bayo Abifarin – Assistant Director

Is a graduate of performing arts of the University of Ilorin. He is presently the senior stage manager of the National Troupe of Nigeria. He has worked with notable directors and has stage managed a number of plays including The Swamp Dwellers by Wole Soyinka and directed by Nick Monu, Ameoboni by Ahmed Yerima and directed by Bayo Oduneye, Yeepa, Solarin Nbo! by Femi Osofisan and directed by Niji Akanni, Little Drops written and directed by Ahmed Yerima, Pastor Jero written and directed by Bisi Adigun, Kurunmi by Ola Rotimi and directed by B. Tomoloju and Aetu by Ahmed Yerima and directed by Niji Akanni.
