The Federal Executive Council on Wednesday granted approvals for the issuance of provisional licenses for the establishment of four new private universities in the country. The government argued that the action was in response to the increasing demands for university education. The four institutions are, namely, Landmark University, Omu-Aran, Kwara State; Samuel Adegboyega University, Ogwa, Edo State; Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State; and Baze University, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. The Minister of education asserted that the approval was granted in order to increase access to tertiary education for teeming youth among other things.

I have been wondering about the mind set of 'mutanen arewa'. How many of our people have the capacity to fund and establish a university? How many have transform that capability to reality? Could it be that these people are not aware of the problem or that they do not see beyond their nose, thus they can not foresee the likely consequence of not establishing private tertiary institutions.

We seem to be good in shouting about our problems. 'Merginalised' and 'educationally disadvantaged' are some of the terms used in describing the north. When it is obvious that the government can no longer or is no loner interested in providing qualitative education, other regions have resorted to setting up private institutions while we are just there watching them widen the gap more.

Could these forums come together and organize an educational conference that would concentrate on creating awareness for setting up private/community educational institutions? I believe the membership of these forums have the capacity to do that and we owe it to the younger generations.
