THE NIGERIAN ONION: April 11, 2011: A Nigerian politico-cultural scholar living in Zhuanghuo, China, has proposed an innovative method of solving the rotational presidency problem in Nigeria. Giving a news conference today and surrounded by virtually all the press media in the world, Prof. Odegbo Maizefule, of the African Institue, University of Zhuanghuo, advocated a 26-letter, language-based rotation rather than a 6-geopolitical-zones based one. He urged that all the 374 languages in Nigeria be grouped by the letters A-Z, and competition for the presidency be among those people with languages starting with the alphabet whose turn it is. Noting that President Jonathan's language is Ogbia - and prophesying that Jonathan has won the 2011 elections already - he posited that all languages with P, then Q, etc. should get ready for subsequent elections, depending on whether Jonathan does four years (till 2015) or eight years. However he advocated a 5-year single presidential term to speed matters up. He then noted wryly that since the major languages (Hausa, Fulani and Igbo) have letters before O, only the Yoruba (with Y, in 55 years time) among the major ethnic groups had a hope of becoming president soon, with the Fulani in 90 years, the Hausa in 100 years and the Igbo in 105 years. To prevent any rigging, he proposed that no language groups be allowed to change their names for the next 100 years. His proposal is already getting rave reviews from many Nigerians, including Prof. Maizefule's people of prideful association, which he refused to reveal upon being pressed by an Association Press reporter.
