The University of Benin (UNIBEN), Benin City, is now the leading tertiary institution in Nigeria and West Africa, according to the latest World Universities Ranking released on Tuesday.
The second position in Nigeria, after UNIBEN, went to the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, while the University of Ibadan clinched the third position.
UNIBEN's Head, Public Relations and Protocol, Mr. Eddy Akpomera, made this known in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune yesterday in Benin City, the Edo State capital.
Akpomera said the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities indicated clearly that UNIBEN emerged tops, far ahead of other universities in Nigeria.
He said the new ranking of UNIBEN was an improvement on its initial placement as third in the country in the ranking exercise carried out early this year.
Akpomera said UNI-BEN led all other universities in West Africa hile the University of Ghana ranked a distant second on the sub-continent.
"Within the African continent, the University of Benin was ranked 32nd position, Obafemi Awo-lowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife 55th position, and the University of Ibadan (UI) 81st position," he said.
"On the African continent, the University of Cape Town is ranked as number one, followed by the Rhodes University and University of Witwatersrand – all in South Africa .
"Globally, the leading university on the African continent in South Africa is ranked 380th position, while the least, Helwan University, is ranked 7756th position. The Nigerian universities were ranked thus: UNIBEN (4904); OAU, Ile-Ife (6215); and UI (7217)," Akpomera added.
