USA Africa Dialogue Series - FW: [EKITIPANUPO] Outcome of the May 25, 2011 EFG (USA) Teleconference Meeting with Governor Kayode Fayemi

Subject: [EKITIPANUPO] Outcome of the May 25, 2011 EFG (USA) Teleconference Meeting with Governor Kayode Fayemi

Ekiti Focus Group (EFG), a multipartisan, not-for-profit organization of Ekitis in Diaspora (USA) organized a teleconference meeting with his Excellency, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Governor, Ekiti Sate, on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 from 9:00 p.m. to 11:0 p.m. (EST). There were more than 70 Ekitis and friends of Ekitis that called in into the teleconference. The Governor eloquently explained his 8-point agenda to the participants emphasizing on the agriculture initiatives to turn Ekiti State into baskets of agricultural products for Nigeria.  The forum was moderated on behalf of EFG by Rev.(Dr.) Emmanuel Abiodun Dada. The Governor for about 1 hour delivered the state of the union of Ekiti State in spite of the fact that the teleconference was put together at a short notice and the Governor has many other pressing issues to attend to but sacrificed to dialogue with Ekiti in Diaspora including those who called in from Canada. For another 1 hour, the Governor answered some questions. He reiterated that:

(1)  That the government sold off the remaining cows on Ikun Dairy Farm to a farm in Kwara State as a way to rescue the already bad situation and his government is currently negotiating for a way forward for a long term success of Ikun Dairy Farm.

(2) That the government is concern and is addressing the issue of pre and post-natal health care and shared the concern of Ekiti on the untimely deaths of mothers at child births. That the government is looking into bringing the old tradition of "Iya Agbebi"  to the mainstream of  modern health care delivery system. While HMO (USA health insurance system) is not the practice in Ekiti State but the government is  working hard on common diseases like malaria fever that threaten the lives of our people though not ignoring the more chronic but relatively fewer cases like cancers.

(3) On the issue of microcredit finances, that the attorney general of Ekiti State is pursuing legal action against defaulters to  recover the money involve.

(4) That he has reaffirmed his stand to President Jonathan Goodluck  on the location of the Federal  University in Ekiti State. That it is the norm that the president asked him for a location and  he gave the president a location and it is not acceptable for the president to go back on their understanding on the location of the University. To compromise on this may lead to other future undermining of his own government position(s).

(5) That he is one of the most easily approachable governor, that he responds to his e-mail and other means of communication, that his government's  door is open and he can be reached more easily via his e-mail address, KFAYEMI@EKITISTATE.GOV.NG

(6) Governor Fayemi responded positively to the idea of forming Ekiti State Diaspora Advisory Committee.

(7) That his government is looking into the recommendation of using YORUBA LANGUAGE as the primary means of teaching/instructions  at the primary school level but recognizing some problems that need to be addressed to implement such recommendation.

(8) He encouraged participants to be more familiar with his 8-point agenda for Ekiti State as a means to help his government to succeed and make Ekiti a better place for all of us.

I like to add that the level of enthusiasm of the participants on Ekiti affairs and the decorum shown are highly commendable.
