rights activists—including me—condemn unequivocally. Nevertheless, it is a
practice that seems to be "tolerated" in some (rural) African societies. I have
even heard a few women in a PBS-Radio (Public Broadcasting Service in the US)
program affirm that: "my husband beats me because he loves me." When I brought
up this topic in my human rights class, the discussion was, to say the least,
boisterous. The same was true at a recent international conference.
Does anyone know what religious texts (and specific verses) say about spousal
beating?
