| Indications emerged on Monday that the kidnappers of the Paramount Ruler in Bayelsa community, the Ebeni Ibe of Atisa Kingdom, Chief Godwin Igodo, had contacted the family, demanding N25m ransom to set the septuagenarian free.
Igodo was abducted in his palace on Thursday night, in Yenagoa Local Government Area by gunmen who arrived the community on a speedboat.
Though the abductors had made demanded for rasnsom, the whereabouts of the monarch were still unknown as the police were reportedly trailing the suspects 72 hours after the incident.
It was learnt that one of the kidnappers who called the family spoke in the monarch's Epie dialect.
The development had fuelled suspicion that the kidnappers were working in collaboration with some of his kinsmen or subjects.
A source from the community told our correspondent that the youths were jolted by the development.
He said the youths were combing the creeks and some undisclosed hideouts to locate the monarch and apprehend the abductors.
The source, who pleaded anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, said the youths viewed the incident as a sacrilege and desecration of the traditional stool.
"What the kidnappers have done is sacrilegious. It is our prayer that they will not go unpunished. We were reliably informed that they (kidnappers) have contacted the family of the monarch demanding N25m ransom before they would release him," he said. |
