Tickets from $25 ($15 UCLA Students)Saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins began wailing jazz as a teen in Harlem. He quickly emerged as a genius in his craft, cutting his teeth with greats such as Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane before establishing himself as one jazz's most important bandleaders. Many of his compositions (St. Thomas, Oleo and Airegin) have become standards and at the age of 80, he is still touring, still wailing, and still dazzling audiences around the world. A 2005 New Yorker profile sums up the unique relationship between the saxophone great and his instrument. "With its brass body, its pearl-button keys, its mouthpiece, and its cane reed, the horn becomes the vessel for the epic of Rollins' talent and the undimmed power and lore of his jazz ancestors."
