Protesters call recognition of the Syrian National Council a NATO recognition of the Syrian rebels.
Scores of Syrians staged a sit-in in front of the Libyan embassy in Damascus on Wednesday to protest against the recognition by the Libyan NATO-rebels' National Transitional Council (NTC) of its Syrian equivalent. Demonstrators shouted slogans condemning the Libyan rebels' council and said that it's a NATO recognition of the Syrian rebels. The protest gathering came a day after Mussa al-Koni, a member of the Libyan rebels' NTC, said in Tripoli that "the NTC has decided to recognize the Syrian National Council (SNC) as the sole legitimate government in Syria" and announced to close the Syrian embassy in Tripoli. The European Union has also welcomed the SNC, but stopped short of any call to recognize it. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of Syrians rallied in support of their president Bashar al-Assad in the capital. They also denounced the creation of the council, saying that the SNC does not represent the Syrians. Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said on Sunday the Syrian National Council is illegitimate, and vowed that Syria would undertake retaliatory measures against any country that might recognize the council.
