RE: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Why Would Any American African Vote For Obama?

"cameroon hasn't been in a conflict across its borders since independence"

Bakassi on my mind...

Pius
The Republic of Cameroon may not have had a violent cross border conflict since its independence. This may have more to do with her neighboring countries. Obasnajo chose not to fight for the Bakassi Islands; he sold out. Some other Nigerian president may have chosen other wise.
The absence of physical conflict is not the presence of peace or reason.

i know that, but what open conflict occurred there? was it a case where real hostilities broke out? anyway, it wasn't for that that ahidjo was buying his guns in the 70s

the real violence visited on africa by the u.s. was generated in its support of oppressive dictators. the actual bombs dropped signified nothing in comparison to the propping up of people like mobutu, or ahidjo, or many others. the support came from supporting french initiatives in propping up their puppet regimes, in not opposing them, or sustaining shameful regimes like that of congo-brazzaville, run out of the elf headquarters with the collaboration of frederic mitterand. scandanlous repression of democratic opponents, as in gabon. go down the list, and the u.s. supported much of what we would call anti-progressive. politics.
i was in cameroon in 77-79, when ahidjo had been in power for 20 years. talked to the number 2 man in the embassy why we continued to support him, continued to send arms to him. this was during the carter years, the "human rights" president, and when the ambassador was mabel smythe, a thoroughly admirable woman i expect some graybeards to recognize as old school black aristocracy (her husband first black ambassador, in his case to egypt).
why support a dictator?
the answer i got, this was a stable regime, and stability is good for business. we got our first branch of an american bank in douala then....
how much we don't know or see. what were those arms for? cameroon hasn't been in a conflict across its borders since independence. but lots of local repression.

You know what they say, give a dog a bad name to hang it.
You know as well as I do that there are some Forum participants that work from their conclusion to the facts. You ask Angolans what violence was visited on them during the Reagan Administration.

"he is also the first American president to drop bombs on Africa....." Bangura

So, the bombs Reagan dropped on Libya were not bombs, the bombs Bush senior dropped on Mogadishu were not bombs, only Obama's bombs are bombs!
