TEXT OF THE PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS (CCS0) AT SAVE NIGERIA GROUP ON SUNDAY
JANUARY 8,2012.
GENTLEMEN OF THE PRESS,
FUEL PRICE STRUGGLE : OPERATION TOTAL PARALYSIS.
There have been several dark moments in Nigeria's chequered history. This one perhaps stands darker than others.
This conference is primarily aimed at drawing your ever curious attention to the deplorable state of the nation with emphasis on the endless lip service paid to good governance, corruption and better life for the mass of our people. This conference is therefore, intended to reaffirm our commitment and bond as leaders of the voiceless in solidarity with the labour movement in keeping a date with the January 9 2012 set for the mother of all struggles against the Jonathan regime on the lunatic increases in the prices of petroleum
products appeals total and effective paralysis of activities nationwide.
In other words we have decided to actively march and struggle with the Nigeria labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Of Congress (TUC) to be part of the Nationwide Non-violent sit- down- at home strike and mass action commencing
Monday.(January 9,2012) till when our tormentors
meet our demands.
Globally , Nigeria is recognized and reckoned as African oil producing giant; the third richest country in the African continent and the 6
th largest producing oil country in the world , yet it remains with out a functional refinery for
decades which therefore sustains corruption and under development that Transparency International kept referring to us as one of the most corrupt nation in the world for years. Rather sad the large scale corruption kept speeding
poverty and under development
either in the North ,South ,East or West of the country.
The President Good luck Jonathan - led federal Government whose political party (the PDP) has been in power since the return of civil rule in 1999 kept increasing the gap between the rich and the poor. Besides deregulating poverty both in the urban and rural areas nation wide . At the same time remains indifferent by not giving a clear road map to combat terror in our land
leading to colossal loss of lives and properties on a daily bases.
As it is today the only answer the PDP government has to aggravating economy crisis in the land is asking the people to subsidize her inefficiencies and corruption in Government. This has become intolerable, unbearable and totally unacceptable.
Since Government knows the powerful cartel
that has kept us in the state of crisis we now find ourselves ,
the administration
should set the machinery and process of prosecution of the person(S) in motion.
While we are anxiously awaiting President
Jonathan on our demand of no kobo increasment of petrol or fuel
at 65 naira we are calling on all Nigerians employed or unemployed
,unionized or otherwise ,professionals and non professionals to make themselves available with history by embracing the labour movement call from January 9 ,2012.
Forward, therefore , gallant men ,women, youth , professionals, religious leaders of Nigeria towards our just inheritance: forward ,brave Nigerian people. We have nothing to lost but our chain and freedom for our generation
.
