Two of you are serious and respected intellectuals and colleagues - but I expect a little more dilligence and circumspection on this matter: I did not extrapolate Otuoke's world ranking - I simply looked it up.

Do this little experiment:  

(1)  Go to the URL  http://www.4icu.org/ng/ 

(2)  The first listed university is University of Ibadan.  Click on the hot link of the university, and it will take you to a page where you will see "2012 University Web Ranking 2356".

(3)  Do the same for Federal University Otuoke down the Nigerian list (No. 68), and you also see the world ranking as 9565.

It was as simple as that.

As to the other important matters that you raised on this issue, I am with you - within limits of political propriety inre my Visitor -  but I will not let you rain on my parade!  I can walk,  work, and chew at the same time.

Let me repeat what I stated elsewhere:  I will eventually work for Otuoke to choose at least SIX RANKINGS to be judged upon - strictly Nigerian (NUC, ASUU, if the latter ever gets around to seriously evaluating its own constituency), strictly African (eg AVCNU), and world (eg ICU, Webometrics, ARWU, Newsweek, Times Higher Ed, QS,) etc. Then for the next 10-15 years - four left of which I will be VC - we hope to be cited AND move up (from NOT RANKED to 10,000th to 8,000th to 500th, to 40th, etc.)

You should never let the excellent prevent the good from happening - or belly-ache so much about present difficulties. It was not as if I did not know that there were educational problems in Nigeria when I agreed to come to the creek corner of Otuoke - but I ain't going to let that make me continue to shout in the dark rather than light a candle.  I will also determine the parameters of my own success - and not let others set the bar so high that I have even failed before I begin.

Come join, if you wish.

Joe, a serious message that emerges out of these rankings (eventhough I paid no attention to who did the ranking and what the barometers were)

is that none of our universities features in the first 2000 universities in the world.  This is quite shameful indeed.  the degrees given out by our universities are largely worthless.  We have serious problems in our country.  Those close to GEJ should suggest to him that it is long overdue to declare national emergency on education (and power supply too)... and ask truly capable people(such as Bolaji, you and I) to help lay the foundation for revamping education in Nigeria (I am sure we will do this for free...we will just build on what transpired during the Education Session Bolaji and I organized during a NIDO Conference in Toronto a few years ago).  GEJ will be my friend if he shows real leadership in fixing education and eradicating corruption.  Sadly, he is too incompetent and mediocre to recognize these urgent needs...and reach out to the right people.

Dear All:

 

Granted that the Federal University, Otuoke and the other eight new federal universities have not FULLY opened their doors yet,  this below is an "interesting" rating/ranking of the 107 universities in Nigeria.  The fairly competitive nature of my being enables me to accept it for Otuoke: surprisingly ranked 68th out of 107 universities in Nigeria, ahead of all the nine new federal universities (except the outlier FU Oye-Ekiti in my home state - which is "wonderfully" ranked 9th), and ahead of 40 other longer-existing universities, including (surprisingly) Ekiti State University (83rd) but not ahead of the same University of Ado-Ekiti (33rd)! 

 

What matters more however for Otuoke is the world ranking - a high (or shall we say low?) 9565th, compared with the highest ranked Nigerian University (Ibadan, 2356th).

 

So, most importantly, we will seek to improve the ranking substantially AND substantively next year, after opening our doors for the first time to students in April 2012 - that is, in another three months, ceteris paribus.

 

This is the importance of positive rankings:  not where you are now, but how you improve - or don't improve - from year to year, and why.

 

And there you have it!
