The University of Lagos is set to commence a degree programme in terrorism studies with the aim of helping Nigeria curtail the excesses of terrorists attacking the country.
Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Adetokunbo Babatunde Sofoluwe said this at a media briefing in Lagos.
"Consequent upon the global challenges of terrorism, the University of Lagos will blaze the trail by introducing a bachelor's degree in terrorism studies which will meet the counter terrorism challenges and risks of involving anti-terrorism techniques and counter terrorist threat," he said.
The VC said that the Bachelor of Science degree in terrorism will incorporate courses such as issues in international terrorism; terrorist ideologies aims; belief and motivation; terrorist modus operandi; international policing policy; cyber terrorism; critical infrastructure protection; aviation terrorism and security; and maritime terrorism and security, among others.
Similarly, the VC said the university has received the green light from the National Universities Commission (NUC) to commence degree programmes in nursing, medical laboratory technology, geology, fisheries, geo-physics and early childhood education.
Aside the new courses, Prof. Sofoluwe also revealed that UNILAG will soon embark on "preponderant shift" towards postgraduate programmes. He added that the move was not geared towards eradicating undergraduate programmes but aims at producing qualitative lecturers for younger universities.
"While we continue with all our undergraduate programmes, there is going to be a preponderant shift towards postgraduate education in the University of Lagos. This will enable the university to produce lecturers both qualitatively and quantitatively for younger universities. In this regard, our postgraduate facilities have been expanded to enable the university make significant increase in our postgraduate intake," the VC said.
