ABSTRACT: LETTER FROM UGANDA about the abduction of children by the Lord's Resistance Army in Uganda. Shortly after midnight on October 10, 1996, St. Mary's, an elite boarding school run by Italian Catholic missionaries in Uganda, was attacked by rebels from the Lord's Resistance Army (L.R.A.) searching for young new recruits. The L.R.A., which occupies Acholiland, has been fighting a guerrilla war against President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni's Ugandan government for 12 years now, with 80% of their army consisting of children, ages 7-17, who have been stolen from their homes, classrooms, and churches. The rebels attacked St. Mary's that night and stole 139 girls, 109 of whom they eventually returned; the remaining 30 were kept to be the soldier's "wives." Joseph Kony, the leader of the L.R.A., has so far kidnapped 12,000 Ugandan boys and girls, mostly from his own tribe, the Acholi, and transformed them into guerrillas. There are now a quarter of a million child soldiers worldwide serving in militias, but the L.R.A. is probably the most sinister instance of child-soldiering
