Of course, to the mad person eating from a dustbin, the action makes sense.

Hitler's attempted extermination of the Jews made sense to the Nazis.

Al Qaeda's campaign of terror makes sense to the group.

Those engaged in the Rwandan massacre were not drunk but acting according to a form of rationality.

Within the scheme of human values necessary for meaningful social existence, however, such goals and the murderous methods used in pursuing them,  like the violent idiocy of Boko Haram, are nonsensical.

They are nonsensical because they are out of correlation with social reality and basic humane values,  to describe it mildly.

They are inappropriate, narrowminded, callous,  outrageous, seditious and  unpatriotic as well as nonsensical.

The scope of goals of Boko Haram has been analyzed by various critics. There is no mystery there, as far as I know. Whatever  is not explicitly stated is affirmed in other ways by what is explicitly stated.

Keeping a cool head does not imply not doing one's duty of examining the full range of a phenomenon and presenting credible analyses  from the available mountain of evidence.

I am keen on learning about the Malian hypothesis that tells is anything new that is not clear from Boko Haram's stated goals and manner of operation.

thanks

Let me also say that there is sometimes a difference between
stated goals and the  undeclared,  underlying motive. It is sometimes about what
the group wants you to think.

You need a cool head in dealing with insurgents.

But assuming that the list captures their demands. What next?
I have just seen a suggestion from the Chadian President that a regional
security entity should deal with this situation. I would also add that
there is interconnection between the Malian situation and
this one.

I'm surprised at this late stage in the story, Gloria,  you state you don't know what Boko Haram  wants.

They have stated it loud and clear.

The value of your summation is that you have presented  what Boko Haram have  declared as their goals,   at various times, in different ways, steadily broadening their claims from revenge for their murdered  leader to a demand to split Nigeria along religious and ethnic lines, using mass murder in pursuit of all  these goals.

I am also intrigued that you see their absolute  inanity as not  being worthy of outright condemnation for its total nonsense.

Please explain why the following is not nonsensical in the context of a secular, democratic nation and in the light of the use of murder, mass murder, in pursuing these goals, goals so pursued for years till the present day :

Stated Goals of Boko Haram Which You Have Outlined Although You Claim  Not To Know what Boko Haram  Wants

Consolidation of fundamentalism
The reconstitution of the Nigerian state
The disintegration of Nigeria
Revenge for killing of leaders
Ethnic domination
Power and domination of the entire state
Recognition - as a player on the political scene

I anticipate your response.

If you claim you cannot recognise these as stated goals of Boko Haram, I am willing to oblige by pointing out their own statements where they unequivocally and unapologetically state these as their motives  but I will do that only if you can explain  what you know of Boko Haram's stated motives from their repeated  public statements and why these stated motives are   different from what you have presented.

thanks

Thanks, Gloria, for your summation of the absolute nonsense represented by Boko Haram, suggesting  the delusion of those who think these Islamic terrorists, these throwbacks to the worst possibilities of Islam,  have anything valid to offer, as is quoted of the Northern Summit Group stating that

"The commitment you have shown for your believe leaves no one in doubt as to the sincerity towards achieving your mission. A mission which may resonates with many in northern Nigeria."

They continue with this deluded identification with the terrorists:

"We also appreciate the fact that you have been wronged severally by the law enforcement agents and politicians. The anger which these wrongs have generated is also understandable but we have to say disproportionate. However, we implore you, to kindly restraint a bit further, stop all attacks and offer again to the government as you did before, a cease fire and dialogue. We are also openly declaring here that the government acted in bad faith by breaking the terms as claimed by the Dr. Ahmed Dattis committee."

The very depth of nonsense.

INTERNATIONAL PRESS CONFERENCE, 30TH APRIL 2012: AN OPEN LETTER TO JAMA’ATU AHLIS SUNNA LIDDA’AWATI WAL-JIHAD, (BOKO HARAM).

I humbly wish to communicate the views of the majority of the citizen. The entire people of Northern Nigeria are crying for mercy and pleading with you. In my position being a Muslim, I must confess that we are totally disturbed and thrown into confusion; we all wish we have answers to most of the questions being asked! Therefore, we seldom speak for the fear of making unguarded comments publicly.
However, we are pleading with you in the Name of ALLAH, THE EXALTED, kindly listen to the voices of the helpless, kindly sheath your swords and allow peace to reign. None of us is happy with the whole situation from the beginning to this moment we are in today, we are frowning at the attitude of the authorities & also condemned the manner the issue if being handled. Though, you are also in a right position to understand our worries & cries.
The commitment you have shown for your believe leaves no one in doubt as to the sincerity towards achieving your mission. A mission which may resonates with many in northern Nigeria. We also appreciate the fact that you have been wronged severally by the law enforcement agents and politicians. Ahmed Dattis committee.
As you can see, glaringly, Arewa (the North) and her subjects are now being ridiculed, what an opportunity for the enemies!
May I relate that the level of panic & fear induced onto the citizens as a result of your activities is unimaginable! We lose concentration at places of worship because our minds are no more at peace. It has confirmed that statement that says the fear of Boko Haram is the beginning of wisdom. On this note, many of our youths that have agreed to join us to call the government to dialogue with your group, have all opted out for the fear of your attacks.
Finally, we sympathize with all the innocent souls that died at the course of your struggles & may the powerful words of ALLAH make pliable your minds & allow peace to reign.
BE PATIENT, BE PATIENT, BE PATIENT!
Ibrahim Garba Wala
President,
Northern Summit Group,
Abuja, Nigeria.
