Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: NigerianID | Harvard Thieves

There are two classes of Harvard: the real Harvard and the 419 harvard. The real harvard earn their knwledge and skills (degree) based on real university work. The 419 harvard buy their degrees just as you will find in some other universities in USA, Nigeria or elsewhere.

I know many people who could not get admission into Nigerian universities but got admitted and studied in USA and UK. Even at the University of Botswana, candidates that were rejected for degree admission went to study for those degrees in UK, Australia and elswhere!!

It is not where you get the degree that matters but how you defend the degree you got through clear manifestation of your work output, job performances, values and attitudes among other desirable qualities of life and social well being.

Dear Mike Okigbo,

Its difficult for me to see what your claim is about. The only reason I take interest is because of your reckless statements about all Nigerian universities.

I had my first degree at the UI and my doctoral degree at Harvard. I lectured at UNIBEN for some time.I found it more rigorous to get my first degree at Ibadan than it was for me to get a doctoral degree at Harvard after three and a half years. There must be hundreds of thousands of us Nigerians who studied in Nigeria that are proud of what we gained here in Nigeria. There must be many also who got their degrees by unorthodox means. I never aided any such abuses.

People should put themselves out there to be judged by what they say, do, or contribute and not by the university they graduated from. It is because many of us worship institutions that people like you have relevance. Your wearing Harvard like a badge does not and should not give you any advantage or respect. If you stayed longer than two weeks at Harvard and had time to play around or take coffee at the Square, you would be humbled. You sound more like an empty barrel to me than a serious person. This discuss does nothing  for one to think otherwise of you..You do not belong anywhere in the Crimson family.

It is unusual for me to use strong language just as it is rare for me to parade my Harvard connection. I don't need to.

Fellow Nigerians,

Why do you want to chop off my head because I am a graduate of Harvard University after two weeks of rigorous work. What i completed in two weeks at Harvard is superior to five years university education in Nigeria where you can get your degree by dating lecturers or pay them their salaries and get straight A  and you get admission through quota, particularly those from the North .Obama was also at Harvard like me. The whites are not complaining about my touting my Harvard degree. This is a Harvard degree, not Nigerian degree and so why are you guys jealous. I attend functions where Nigerians parade their titles , e.g. Architect Okoro, Engineer Ola, Pharmacy Asuquo, Reverend Oko, Alhaji Arewa, Lawyer/Barister Rotimi[SAN], Professor Ewedu[has N.C.E from college of Education in Nigeria and teaches Maths in a community college]. This is mine.

Any way i have not used my degree to take any person's job in Nigeria. I have not used my Harvard degree to secure contracts . I need it to belong.

   Mike Okigbo[Harvard].

Is it not disgraceful that the guy is touting his being an "alumni"(sic) because he is a "gratuate"(sic) just as Obama is an "alumni"(sic) after a 2-week course
Harvard tends to promote such towards getting money from every dick and harry attending a day course but I thought the course must be at least 1 month long before any one can claim to be an alumnus. Even then.....

Mike:

Please tell us you are pulling our legs!!!

Seriously speaking, to each his own.

Your definitions of 'graduate' and alumnus/alumni of an institution  are
so broad it would only be tenable
in today's Nigeria, the same jurisdiction where a two week Holy
Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina earns the pilgrim the privilege
of adding the title Alhaji or Alhaja to his or her name for a whole life term
and a visit to Jerusalem, even if it is just an overnight stop over stop over
on a Mediterranean  cruise ship
--earns one the privilege of using the post fix--JP (for Jerusalem Pilgrim) after once name.

A two week Diploma should never be equated to a full degree
regardless of which institution granted the Diploma or Certificate to an individual,
the same way that a sabbatical done at any faculty at a university should
not be equated or confused with being a tenured or untenured lecturer or Professor at that
institution. The same distinction holds for a Honorary degree awarded
to honor an individual for his or her remarkable contributions to humanity on the one hand
and academic degrees that are earned after rigorous multi-year studies.

Unfortunately, any thing goes in Nigeria, probably the only institution
in the world where attendance at a two week course at Harvard qualifies
one to claim being an alumnus of Harvard University:)

If you start dropping the "H Bomb" just for attending a two week course
at Harvard, what do you expect of those students who completed first and second
degrees at the university --some of which might take anywhere from 4 to 9 years to complete?
Should they be dropping ballistic "H" missiles every day of their lives?:)

There is a jocular saying in Yoruba language that goes along these lines:

" aji ni do ti on fe se bi oko eni"---

in which a woman admonishes her paramour
from a one night's stand for startung to behave as if she is her husband the following morning. A situation
that is similar to a visitor to a household, who by the end of the first week starts
acting as the landlord!

He he he he!!!!!

Bye,

Ola

That is your own cup of tea. I attended a two week conference at Harvard and I have a certificate that bears Harvard University. The definition of graduate includes that and so I am a harvard gratuate. I am an alumni, period. And Barack Obama is also an alumni.

Dear All:

I agree with Dr. Ola Kassim 100%.

Dear  Yinka:

Attending a one or two week course or seminar on any subject and in any field
of human endeavor should never be equated with 'studying' at Harvard or any other
Ivy League institution either at the undergraduate or postgraduate level..

I must have attended over 50 one or two week long courses and conferences at Harvard and many other
Ivy League University or College Medical Schools in the USA, Canada and Europe over the years.

But I remain a proud graduate of the University of Ibadan Medical School notwithstanding that
I have also completed 4 and 2year post graduated studies at the University of Toronto and Queens University
in Canada. It would be a false claim to assert that I am a graduate of the University of Toronto
or Queens University when asked about where I studied for my medical degree--considering
the questioner is for the most past interested in my undergraduate studies first and foremost.
I believe it is fraudulent to claim that one attended a university even when all that
one did at the university is that one attended a course or seminar or obtain a Diploma from the institution. .

Where the road meets the mat is in one's performance post graduation. I believe strongly that
many graduates of Nigerian universities can hold their own in any profession when competing
with graduates of Ivy League schools at post graduate levels and in their chosen professions
after graduation. Outside of Nigeria, the only advantages enjoyed by graduates of Ivy League schools
over all other graduates are name recognition (and hence better job opportunities) and the connections
one makes when attending these schools.

The key degree is always one's undergraduate degree.

Nigerians have a tendency to exaggerate
their affiliations to Ivy League schools abroad. This is the reason we have too many
Toronto and Chicago graduates amongst our political class. Attending a 6 month Diploma
Course in Business or Government studies at the Kennedy School of Government studies
does not equate in my own mind to completing a Masters or PhD degree program at Harvard.
Neither does auditing courses at a University in Chicago equate attending or obtaining an
undergraduate or postgraduate degree from the university,

Let us start embracing who we truly are even if we are aware that our institutions of higher learning
fall far behind world standards. Rome was not built in a day. Some of the universities we are competing
with abroad are over 200 years old. But this by itself is no excuse for not doing much better than we are to raise
the standards of Nigeria's institutions of higher learning, whic instead or progressing are currently regressing due to shortsighted
and retrogressive government policies on higher education.

A man or a woman who claims to have a degree at a university he or she never attended as a full or part time student,
just because he or she attended a one or two week course at the institution is a fraudulent human being--
the kind who will steal when put in a position of power.

Bye,

Ola
