| "Why on earth would they close down the institution because of street demonstrations? What about those students who want to go to class to complete there education?" Nkechi Comment: Don't you think that the Government may have assessed the situation before taking that painful action in the interest of all? If I may draw from my personal experience, I was once a student leader in College of Science & Technology (now RUST) Port Harcourt in the early 70s. We had a demonstration against poor students' welfare - particularly catering services that turned violent at the end of the day. The Institution was closed down by the State Government when it was too late, and virtually every good structure of the College like the Car-Pool, Rector's and Registrar's offices, etc were already vandalised for no concrete or just reason. At the end of the day all the students' leaders - including my humble self were rusticated from the College after a public inquiry headed by Justice Alagoa who later became the first indigenous Chief Judge of the State. The rest is history. For allowing the demonstration to run its full course before closing down the school, the student leaders lost their studentship, I was in my final year, the Institution lost a lot of its property that worth millions of Naira, the College was closed down indefinitely for so long before the rest of the students, outside of the leaders were allowed back on re-admission, signing of an undertaking and payment of a huge deposit. All these could have been avoided in the interest of all if the Government had shut down the school immediately as the demonstration progressed. "Prevention is better than cure." "Even if the demonstrations are taking place on campus streets, what do you have campus security for? Is this part of their training and some of the reasons why they earn their salary?" - Nkechi Comment: I can authoritatively tell you that if that demonstration were allowed to run its course and it turned violent somewhere along the line, even the lives of the campus securities, who are very few in number in the first place would be at risk. In my own era students literally arrested some of them while a few others took to their heels. Campus security at a time of violent demonstration in the campus? Please don't go there! I think the Government has a good reason for closing down the Uni and it won't take long for the Institution to re-open.
