"I plan to make a large color print of SLS in his elegant Emirage traditional dress visiting his office

Dear All:
In more civilized climes and in a nation comprised mostly of citizens
with a more psychologically mature outlook on life and who possess
a positive and confident image about their cultural attributes and
those of their co- nationals within a multicultural nation with less ethnocentric
and xenophobic societal,
ethos, the fact of Sanusi, Gov of CBN appearing at his office in Abuja in a ceremonial attire
should be one of celebration and affirmation that notwithstanding centuries
of westernization that we Africans still cherish some of the age old rich cultural practices
that were inherited from our immediate and ancient ancestors.
Unfortunately the preferred kind of positive attitude and celebration of self and others
is not shared by most Nigerians including some of the most educated many
of whom ironically consider themselves 'enlightened.' To be educated is not equivalent
to being enlightened. One of the attributes of an enlightened human being is tolerance
for others as well as affirmation of the differences between fellow Nigerians some of
which are cultural whilst others are religious in origin and the ability to share the joy
amongst fellow Nigerians of different ethnic identities..
Just like many other fellow African countries Nigeria, is a nation whose citizens remain hobbled
by the aftermath of the negative effects of colonization which still endure more than half a century
post colonization.
Far too many southern Nigerians (not just the xenophobic and Islamaphobic loonies like Zubbie
Ekwueme) mistake the Emir's traditional attire from many jurisdictions in northern
Nigeria with Islamic mode of dress when in fact it has nothing to do with Islam.
Just yesterday, I saw a picture of Mallam Bala Mohamed, Minister of the FCT Abuja
wearing a similar attire riding a horse. Notwithstanding his last name, Bala Mohamed
is a practicing Christian not a Muslim. Mallam Bala Mohammed and his fellow worshipers pray to Allah
(Almighty God) in their church--the same Allah that all Nigerian Muslims worship.
I cannot remember how many times I have seen Canadians of Scottish descent
wear their green kilts to the office especially during times of family or national
celebrations in Scotland, a country in which they are up to 5 generations removed
and one which they have never visited and have no intention to visit in their
lifetime. Some female colleagues from India wear their Saris to the office
whilst others from Turkey and Iran wear the Hijab to the office. No one seems
to mind---as these are all within the scope of the dress attire in a mufti-cultural Canada,
If a newly installed Obi in Igbo land or Oba or Bale in Yoruba land, in a similar position to SLS's,
decides to wear his ceremonial dress to the office
to share the good tidings with his staff and thank them for their support and goodwill messages on his coronation,
the Igbo and Yoruba respectively in his office would be celebrating genuinely, whilst those who do not share
his or her ethnic heritage would be deriding the entire gesture as either a charade and even worse that it
is an attempt by either the Igbo or the Yoruba to impose their culture on the rest of Nigeria,
I plan to make a large color print of SLS in his elegant Emirate traditional dress visiting his office
and post it on the wall of my office tomorrow morning--for no other reason but that it would become a
talking point with my colleagues when they come in to my office for whatever purpose. I will be doing so

On Friday last week, Sanusi was turbaned the Dan Maje Kano by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, appeared in office in a chieftaincy garb on Wednesday because workers persuaded him to do so, the bank's spokesman said on Thursday.
Some national newspapers published a photograph of Sanusi in his chieftaincy regalia with some bank officials at the bank's corporate headquarters in Abuja on Monday.
But CBN spokesman Ugo Okoroafor said the apex bank's governor was "not on duty" the day he appeared in office in the regalia.
He said, "For the avoidance of doubt we want to use this medium to state that the CBN Governor was on a short break, and was not on duty on the said day.
"Malam Sanusi flew into Abuja after the ceremony and when staff got wind of his presence they persuaded him to pass through the office so that they could see the new Dan Maje."
