One is reminded of the Taliban's destruction of historic sites, and monuments and other art following their takeover of Afghanistan under the pretext of religious purity. 

The arrogance of religious extremism is unfathomable.  Religious extremists' intolerance and disrespect of others and history is simply very scary. It is no wonder that their rule is crudely elitist and undemocratic. Heaven help those they rule over.
