NEWS REPORT ON ADELEKE UNIVERSITY FIRST ANNUAL DISTINGUISHED GUEST LECTURE The Adeleke University community in Ede Osun State was agog on Monday, July 9, 2012 when Professor Toyin Falola, the Frances Higginbotham Nalle Centennial Professor in History and Vice President International Scientific Committee, UNESCO Slave Route Project delivered a breathtaking lecture at the maiden Adeleke University Annual Distinguished Guest Lecture titled"The African Impact on Global Cultures" Professor Ayandiji Aina the President/Vice-Chancellor of Adeleke University in his welcome address, described Professor Toyin Falola as one of the most influential intellects of our time and a distinguished scholar whose influence is global. The Vice-Chancellor said that the University is setting in motion a culture which celebrates eminent personalities from various Organizations, Industries and Institutions to lend valuable Information from their experiences to our staff, students and community members through Distinguished Guest Lectures. Professor Aina further explained that the Distinguished Guest Lecture would be an annual event to commemorate the institution's anniversary which would benefit the audience with the vast knowledge and experience from celebrated renowned scholars the world over. Dr. Adedeji Adeleke the Pro-Chancellor of the Institution appreciated the Guest Lecturer for honoring the institution's invitation. The Pro-Chancellor stated that "…we are ready as an institution to offer quality education that is affordable in order to produce world class graduates". He concluded that the University is God's own project and therefore not targeted at profit making but a means of giving back to humanity. Professor Toyin Falola, the prolific scholar established that the African impact on Global Cultures cuts across various aspects of Art, science, technology and medicine that have been under explored. He further stated that as Africans we need to showcase our culture, knowledge, ideas and skills not only in our local environment but also globally especially through connections and interactions with other Africans in Diaspora. He further charged that the media should be maximally explored to promote our cultural values and ingenious creativity.
While addressing the students, Professor Falola explained that students are a significant part of the global picture and therefore should be trained to benefit from a global market. He also advocated that the knowledge and skills that are acquired from the University must be converted to values for the growth of people and institutions. The professor concluded his lecture with a charge on entrepreneurship. He stated as an example that there is nothing bad with a graduate of English Literature acquiring skills in carpentry and owning a carpentry business. He further charged the institution to create an enabling environment for teaching students how to own businesses, generate more sales, create jobs and make more profits.
His Royal Highness the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin Aroyinkeye 11 while contributing to the Lecture established the fact that culture is not static but dynamic and therefore all hands must be on deck to make sure we celebrate our people's creative knowledge and skills in the global arena.
