AU condemns Boko Haram, urges international action

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union has condemned the activities of the Boko Haram sect, urging the international community to assist the West African nation deal with the problem.
AU's Commissioner on Peace and Security, Ambassador Lamamra Ramtane said this at a news briefing after a close to 12 hour closed door session at the on-going 19th Ordinary Session of the AU meeting of Heads of State and Governments, in Addis Ababa, on Saturday.
He described the sect's activities and that of other armed groups in northern Mali as a threat to peace and security in the sub-region in particular and the international community in general.
"Council also reaffirms the African Union's total rejection of terrorism and the resort to armed rebellion to further their political cause.
"It also expresses its deep concern with the seriousness of the situation in northern Mali backed by the armed, terrorist and criminal groups in the area;
"Council also notes with concern reports of the presence of several non- Malian armed groups (in Africa), in particular Mujwa and Boko Haram.
"Council further notes that this situation poses a serious threat to regional and international peace and security and as such, calls for urgent and effective action by the entire international community."
Ramtane also said, "The Peace and Security Council recalled all its past communiqués on the situation in Mali and reaffirmed the continued commitment of the AU and that of all its member states to the national unity and territorial integrity of the Republic of Mali which cannot be subject to discussion or negotiation and continues in its determination to spare no effort to ensure that preservation.
"Council also strongly condemns the human rights violations perpetrated by the various armed groups and the senseless destruction of cultural, spiritual and historic heritage of the region.
"Council reiterated its full support to the ECOWAS effort aimed at resolving the crisis in Mali."
On the situation in Guinea-Bissau, the Security Council expressed gratitude to Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states for the efforts so far made to restore order in the country. It reiterated its full support for the position of the regional body in addressing the issue.
