38th ANNUAL MEETING of the
NEW YORK AFRICAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION
State University of New York at Binghamton
April 5–6, 2013
CALL FOR PROPOSALS / ABSTRACTS
DEADLINE: December 31, 2012
GLOBAL AFRICA, TRIPLE HERITAGE AND PAX AFRICANA:
LOOKING BACK AND LOOKING FORWARD
The New York African Studies Association (NYASA) will hold its 38th Annual Meeting, April 5–6, 2013, at Binghamton University. The Local Organizing Committee takes special pride in announcing that this annual meeting also takes place on the occasion of the eightieth birthday of Professor Ali A. Mazrui and the fiftieth anniversary of his publishing career.
Long before the word "globalization" entered the lexicon, the African people had been "globalized" by dispersal abroad and expanding multiculturalism at home. Africa's triple heritage was part of that history. That heritage was a convergence of three civilizations in Africa—Africanity, Islam and the impact of the West.
Ali A. Mazrui coined the term "Africa's triple heritage," and it is probable that he was the first to use the concept of "global Africa". Mazrui also popularized the term "Pax Africana" in the sense of "Africa's capacity to be its own policeman." Participants in this year's NYASA annual meeting are hereby called upon to interpret those concepts in their own way and scrutinize them on their own terms with a view to reflecting on the past and marching ahead.
The Institute of Global Cultural Studies at Binghamton University, host of the 2013 annual meeting of NYASA, invites abstracts of papers, proposals for presentations, panels and roundtables on the above theme and its variations including the following:
