USA Africa Dialogue Series - NYT: Frank Bruni on Big Bad Biden

This is just a commentary on last night...

In today's New York Times, Frank Bruni has a good piece on last night's unequal match-up between Big Bad Biden and Power Point Pastor. I must confess that I was not looking forward to the debate. It is what it is, but there is something almost insulting to pit Paul Ryan against Joe Biden. I have been a student of Joe Biden for a very long time and I don't know anyone who knows more than the man when it comes to foreign policy and judicial affairs. Look at American history and he has been front and center in many seminal events affecting America - beginning as a young man, the polarizing appointment of Clarence Thomas, being one of them. There was no way he was not going to feel exasperated by the presence of a near-empty suit, a power point pastor in the person of Paul Ryan. Where, Biden is learned and experienced, Ryan was the proxy of a generation - long on style, woefully short on substance. It is becoming the way of the world I guess, but it is becoming obvious that many people do not read as much as they should. You want to be a Jack Kennedy, but you don't need the hard work that produced such eloquence, thoughts and grace. You want to be a scholar but your PhD is the equivalent of a third-rate first degree from a financially stressed institution. You mouth all the right rubrics but it is painfully obvious that it is all sizzle and no suya.

So yes, of course, Paul Ryan won last night. Because in the merciless thrashing, he got last night, many of us saw us in him. Empty suits. It is the way of the world. In a perverse sense, I almost pray that Romney and Ryan win this thing so that we get to the bottom and to the bottom of this, this celebration of mediocrity, this adulation of style over substance. Let's just get it over with so that we can learn one final lesson, and this time, not from Joe Biden and Chinua Achebe - that history matters.
