STILL ON THIS MATTER OF ACHEBE vs AWO - by Kelechi Jeff Eme
-It is 100% wrong to equate criticism of Awo's legacy to condemnation of the Yoruba race. The two are mutually exclusive.
-Political leaders like Tinubu have worked hard for national integration and manifested same in the appointments he made while in power and is still encouraging same.
-Those attacking Achebe are misguided in their belief that such will diminish the man.
-A man with work published in over 40 international languages will definitely not be perturbed by the rantings of ethnic jingoists.
-A man voted by Africans as the runner up to Nkrumah as the African of the millennium ahead of Mandela who came third will not be diminished by unfocused criticisms.
-Did Awo ever declare hunger as a legitimate tool of war?
-If he did, what is the fuss about?
-Did Awo lead the campaign for the abolition of state police in the guise that it prevented AG from winning elections in the north?
-Was Awo not convicted of treason by a competent court of jurisdiction?
-Did Awo and his colleagues follow due process in resolving elections of 1964 and 1983?
-Did Awo arbitrarily change the Olu of Itsekiri to Olu of Warri because of the Itsekiri's affiliation to AG thereby laying the foundation for the loss of lives in Warri in the 90s due to the struggle of the Itsekiris, Ijaws and Urhobos?
-Was Awo not the first high profile civilian that participated in a military government thereby consolidating military rule in Nigeria?
LIKE I POINTED OUT EARLIER, AWO WAS A GOOD LEADER OF THE YORUBAS. THEY ARE RIGHT IN CELEBRATING HIM BUT THEY MUST ALLOW OTHERS THE SPACE TO CRITICIZE HIM.
There is no need to go further for now.
