Film Summary
THE FLAT is an emotionally riveting documentary, in which Arnon Goldfinger takes us on a remarkable journey through history and gives us a truly unique look at the way different generations viewed the Holocaust. A meticulously researched and immensely entertaining film, it is instantly relatable to anyone who has ever had questions about their family.

At age 98, filmmaker Goldfinger's grandmother passed away, leaving him the task of clearing out the Tel Aviv flat that she and her husband shared for decades since immigrating from Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Sifting through a dense mountain of photos, letters, files, and objects, Goldfinger begins to uncover clues that seem to point to a greater mystery and soon a complicated family history unfolds before his camera. What starts to take shape reflects nothing less than the troubled and taboo story of three generations of Germans – both Jewish and non-Jewish – trying to piece together the puzzle of their lives in the aftermath of the terrible events of World War II.

THE FLAT had its world premiere at the Jerusalem International Film Festival in 2011, where it won for Best Director of a Documentary, and its North American premiere at the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival, where it was awarded for Best Editing. The film, which is Israel's top-grossing documentary of the year, was also winner of the Israeli Academy Award (the Ophir) for Best Documentary, the Best Documentary at the Bavarian Film Awards and winner of Best Film and Best Director at the Israeli Documentary Filmmakers Forum. Sundance Select will open THE FLAT October 19 in New York and Los Angeles, with a national rollout to follow.

"One of the best movies of the year. It plays like a great mystery - and it is. This is what a documentary should be – smart, moving, profound and unpredictable – in other words, what we look for in a great film. 'The Flat' is all of that and more." - Michael Moore

"Engrossing...an astonishing trip into buried history and the human capacity for self delusion." -John DeFore, The Hollywood Reporter
