Dr. Belai:
I take that your priority is health care. Here is the crossroad (not Karl Rove): the African community is not mentioned in the public narrative or punditry circles on the diverse coalition that helped in the reelection of the president. Looking at the margins, undoubtedly, Continental Africans played game changing roles in close calls, especially in Virginia. I was amazed at the number of college students who trooped back to vote in Virginia.
On the panel, you are on spot. However, without local structure/leadership at state/county levels, Obama cannot do anything. The Affordable Health Care Act provides for ethnic data ( not only racial data) in order to reduce health disparities. Therefore, the Continental African population qualifies as a specific target population. In 2009, La Raza spoke for all immigrants and did a good job. Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. Even House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) conceded. LOL, he also warmed up on comprehensive immigration like 360 degree turn-around Sean Hannity.
.
So how does this law of the land work?
We need those committed to cause, even in bad weathers, to ensure the Continental African community is newly accounted for. It has never happened in a comprehensive way and in budgetary allocations.
Remember, you cannot complain about the office. LOL. If we have no heat
or air condition, at least give credit to the fact of paid rents to that point. Not easy if $1000 is coming from an individual's personal pocket for 18 months until she had to scream, fainted one day, and landed in the hospital. My dad, a public health expert, was not amused to say the least.LOL What kind of advocacy takes someone to the hospital? He asked. I am not about to repeat that feat:-)
Hell, you did not check on me when you attended the meeting in the office and the air condition did not seem to work and you are asking me to try Obama? Is that how African hospitality is supposed to look like?
Nah, it is not a piece of cake dealing with Africans at various levels on Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. While some are grappling with the basic needs of food, clothing and shelter emergencies, others on the other end are at the level of self actualization and suffering from acute frustration due to African governments' pathetic failure to recognize the talents of its emigre community, let alone use the talents. My mistake was putting you all together; it was like a Portuguese parliament of discordant noises in that meeting.
Anyway, I have private health care insurance, you have, many others do - but we have to fight for health care for the community as Hispanics, Jews, Asians do. Continental Africans voted for Hope, Change and Forward, too. Hispanic and Asians have specific health care programs. Lumping Continental Africans and calling them African-Americans, when behaviors saddled with cultural orientations are co-cofactors to health, make no practical sense.
Just to illustrate the point. My Mom's older sister at seventy something voted. She knows nothing about being African American, never attended any town hall and is not about to be re-oriented for cultural adjustment or assimilation. THAT IS THE NEW REALITY OF THE DIVERSE America today and the coalition that voted for Obama. I have no idea why cultural anthropologists need to be summoned, as the last dire resort, to educate politicians: Continental Africans and African Americans are two legitimate populations just like Jews are Whites but there are Jewish health and social services.
We need health care!! Not Tea Party but Smell the Coffee Party....LOL.
Over to all....Health Care and Constituency services are running neck to neck. Send your vote to africanservices@aol.com
