USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: THE OJUKWU WILL: SUMMARY

Nebu:

Like you, I also doubt that the Will was not altered.  Secret daughter beside, I cannot believe that Dim Ojukwu did not include ANY endowment to Biafran veterans - say the ones at Oji River....unless that was a secret undisclosed part of the will.

Otherwise, it would be very surprising....

And there you have it.

PS:  In a spectacular display of reportorial laziness, not a SINGLE newspaper referring to this daughter "Tenny Haman" gives a SINGLE picture of her or ANY speculation of who she could be.  Obviously, she seems OLDER than Emeka Jr. (because she is listed BEFORE him), and she is in Nigeria (because she is being given Jubilee Hotel right there in Kaduna - so most likely a daughter born (of a White mother?)  while Ojukwu was a student at a Oxford or a soldier in the North.

STD,
I highly doubt that the Will was not altered. It is incomprehensible that Ojukwu would list all of his children and then leave out his first son known by almost everyone who knew Ojukwu personally. He was under no obligation to leave anything for him but integrity demanded of him to acknowledge the existence of such son.

What would be Ojukwu's reason to not acknowledge Debe in his Will? The paternity was not in doubt, Debe looks just like him and bears his last name. Debe is correct in challenging the Will; it appears altered.

Such legal tussle contesting a will may be a way of preventing the others immediate access to the assets in the will. The truth is for him to move on except he believes that he Dad was wrongly swayed. Was he on good terms with the father? Was he making attempts to take charge of his father's assets while he was on his sick bed or making attempts to push Bianca and her kids out of the house when his Dad was on the sick bed? Those are factors that will make any dying man rescind any commitment to a first child. There were such stories.

There is a lesson for all of us in this.

It was even said that Awolowo did not pass on much of his assets to his only son because of that son's attitude to work and spending money.

The good thing is that Ikemba had a will. Can you imagine the chaos if there was no will?

Sometimes, there are actions or behavior pattern of a child that makes a father disown such a child in a will including wasteful/spendrift behavior with possibility that the family's fortune could be liquidated, acts of treachery against a father, an empowered eldest son unruly behavior against the other siblings when the father is alive especially an infirmed father, etc.

It is sad Ojukwu did not leave anything in his will for his first son Debe. Debe is his photocopy and you don't need any DNA. The first time I met him was at the faculty of law University of Nigeria Enugu campus in the early 1980s and I did not need any introduction.
Those I spoke to about this apparent anomaly wonder what the relationship was between father and son.

The interesting thing however is that of all the women Ojukwu married only the marriage with Ambassador Olivia Odinakachukwu Ojukwu [Bianca] was blessed in the Roman Catholic Church. In the eyes of the church only that marriage existed and he received full catholic funeral rites .The church does not look at who had the first child or son but looks at the holy matrimony.

Those who married in the church and then subsequently married other women while the first marriage was still existing do not receive catholic rites mbosi onwu. To be eligible to receive the rites, the first blessed marriage must be dissolved in civil court and then an order of annulment received in a church tribunal after which the subsequent marriage has to be blessed in the church ka iwu uka si welu di.

Ojukwu's will read; 1st son Debe not mentioned, another unknown daughter benefits

The will of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, was on Friday presented to the family with his widow, Bianca, getting the lion's share.
The presentation by the Chief Registrar of the Enugu High Court, Mr Dennis Ekoh, was witnessed by Bianca, Mr Val Nwosu, Ojukwu's first cousin, and Mr Mike Ejemba.

In the will, the late Ojukwu identified one Tenny Haman as one of his children. Ojukwu listed the children as Tenny Haman, Chukwuemeka Jnr, Mmegha, Okigbo, Ebele, Chineme, Afam and Nwachukwu.

The Ikemba gave the Casabianca Lodge at No. 7, Forest Crescent, GRA, Enugu, two property at Jabi and Kuje in the FCT as well as all his money and personal effects to his widow.

He also said that Bianca should replace him as the trustee in the family company, Ojukwu Transport Ltd, while also giving her two plots of land in his village at Nnewi. He, however, added that if she re-married, the land should be taken away from her.

The first son, Emeka Jnr., got the family house at Nnewi, while the newly mentioned daughter, Tenny Haman, got the Jubilee Hotel located in Zaria, Kaduna State. The Biafran warlord also shared other landed property in the village among all his children.

Ojukwu listed the trustees and executors of the will to include Bianca, Emeka Jnr and Mr James Chukwuneme. The will did not mention Ojukwu's first son, Debe Ojukwu, the Akpunwa Nnewi.

Reacting to the will, Bianca, who is Nigeria's Ambassador to Spain, expressed satisfaction with its contents. "It was a fair will. This time round, he did not disappoint us,'' she said.

The ambassador, however, expressed shock at the disclosure of a new daughter in the family, whom she said had never been mentioned by her husband. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that none of the children was present at the presentation of the will. (NAN)".. From JEJE MI NI MOJOKO Communications
