USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Quotes By Chidi Anthony Opara

"Most worship God only because they are afraid of him." ( Chidi
Anthony Opara poetry)

"Most", eh?

Is this true?

Are you referring to monotheists?

I worked with an Iraqi guy who told me that Saddam once paid a
surprise visit to their department and when his colleague who was
standing next to him, saw Saddam he started shaking uncontrollably.
" Why are you trembling when you see me? Saddam asked him.
" I am afraid "
"Why are you afraid? "asked Saddam with a smile and then gave the
order " Take him out a shoot him – he must be trembling because he is
feeling guilty about something.!"

King David asks in Psalm 130 : 4 " If you kept a record of sins, O
lord, who would survive?"

I'd say that in Africa's political sphere for example where sycophancy
is rife, the sycophancy or worship of e.g. this or that president is

Every morning, among the orthodox faithful, after the ritual washing
of the hands a short prayer is said, beginning with the Hebrew words
translated as "The beginning of wisdom is fear of Hashem" ( a proverb
of Solomon 1.7)

After a while such a prayer has surely penetrated into the
subconscious, yes?

Yet, " A thief, while breaking into a home calls upon God to help
him" ( Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi) ….

One Sabbath morning as we walked to the Shul, Mr. C told me this joke
about a poor boy (like me) who wanted to marry a rich Jewish
merchant's daughter:

"And who will buy her nice dresses and wonderful Jewellery?" asked the
rich merchant
The suitor who feared the Lord, replied, " The Almighty will provide"
"And how are you going to be able to afford to take my daughter on
holidays to Switzerland and France?"
Again, the suitor who had bitachon and feared the Almighty replied, "
The Almighty will provide"
Mr. C told me that it was at that point that the rich merchant
realised that he was "The Almighty" that his daughter's suitor was
referring to....
