Funmi,
Gun control is the major issue. Take away the guns and people who want to commit murder can use clubs and knives but these could not be mass murderers. There are lots of sane people who, out of transitory rage, pick up a gun and shoot the person with whom we may have problems, then plead temporary insanity. They pick up the gun because it is there!!! By the defining of temporary insanity resulting in occasional rage, we could all be classified as mentally ill. Do we all need intensive mental health services? The New York Times cited a recent paper by some economists who computed that, if we were to arm every teacher in our schools and supply armed police guards we would incur a total cost of $400 million per death prevented ( assuming we prevent all deaths due to gunshots in our schools). Is this a better way to spend our limited resources under the current budgetary conditions? And this idea is coming from people who are concerned about the debt. Nuts, if you ask me.
Happy Holidays

Ken,
What lies? Due to confidentiality, I wouldn't share my professional experience regarding guns and mental illness with the listserv. Gun control is not the issue, the focus should be on providing intensive mental health services for people with mental illness. Period!
