CAPE TOWN BASED SENIOR RESEARCHER POSITION
Exciting opportunities to join at the start of a four-year peacebuilding programme
(2012 – 2016)
The Centre for Conflict Resolution (CCR), an independent, non-governmental Pan-African organisation, based in Cape Town, South Africa, and ranked the most internationally recognised think-thank in Africa, has three vacancies for the next four-year phase of its Africa programme starting in July 2012. Over the last 40 years, the Centre conducted extensive capacity-building, facilitated, and mediated peace processes across the continent. The Centre has also recently produced 40 policy reports, 13 books and 14 policy briefs.
SENIOR RESEARCHER
.
The Policy Development and Research project has an established background in conducting policy research on how to prevent and manage conflicts in the region, including Africa's evolving security architecture and on responding effectively to African conflicts. The main focus of the post is to write, edit, and manage projects and staff
Key responsibilities include:
- To write and edit reports, policy briefs, and books.;
- To build an effective and motivated cluster team;
- To identify relevant research areas and conduct research projects;
- To lead and supervise researchers;
· To undertake research and provide research guidance;
· To write and present seminar reports;
- To communicate and publish research findings; and
· To act as a CCR ambassador and lead the Project team in building and maintaining the profile of the Centre internally and externally
Requirements:
· Proven research and excellent report, journal, and proposal-writing skills in English;
· Proven management skills;
· A Masters degree in international relations, African politics, or other relevant social sciences. A PhD is an advantage
· Strong writing and editorial skills;
· Knowledge of South Africa's foreign policy, the UN, the EU, the MDGs, and security and development issues;
· 3 - 5 years relevant experience within an academic/research environment;
· Experience in conducting research programmes in Africa;
· Experience and knowledge of African politics and/or approaches to conflict resolution in Africa;
· Knowledge of continental issues and institutions;
· Highly developed analytical skills with attention to detail; and
· Must be vibrant, self-motivated and able to work independently to deadlines.
CCR has vast experience working with national, regional, and UN and EU-related institutions and provides some unique qualities that enable it to combine training, mediation, policy research and development within networks with influential leaders and researchers while conducting extensive mediation work at the grassroots level.
