| Youth Initiatives on AV Radio presents "Pioneer Young Journalists in War-torn Sudan" Friday, December 14th, 2012 at 12pm EST / 5pm GMT Tune in by Skype: "Africanviews" Or by phone: 1-760-283-0850 With co-hosts Sharon Benzoni & Tully McLoughlin The young people of Sudan know conflict as a way of life, a reality of existence. It erupted long before they were born, even a year before the country gained its independence from Egypt in January 1956. And peace did not come until the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005. Last July, more than 98% of the electorate voted for the independence of South Sudan. Has peace finally arrived for this troubled land? Today on Youth Initiatives we speak with two young journalists with interest in human rights, politics, and civic debate, living and working in Sudan. Moez Ali, founder of 500 Words Magazine, describes himself as "a normal concerned Sudanese citizen," but his efforts to establish his independent online English-language magazine speak to his exceptional abilities. We'll also speak with journalist Samira Ahmed from Girifna.com, who says she "reached a point where [she was] truly angry with the government's human rights violations" and sought a channel for her emotions and voice. What do they hope for the future of Sudan and its southern brother? What do they hope for themselves? |
