the relationship between a celibate clergy and the sexual abuse of boys; the adamant, meaningless opposition to birth control, never mind abortion; the opposition to women in the clergy; the underlying patriarchal foundation of sexual and gender policies that harmed women forever, and are now more and more out of step with ordinary catholics who have to ignore church teaching or else have 20 children....
there was a church that did change meaningfully in latin america 50 years ago, and i would be hoping some day to see it return. maybe a jesuit from argentina might enable that since it was a roman papacy that destroyed it. in other words, a liberation theology is what i would want to see.
