Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - RE: white smoke, white pope

Hey Folks,

Apart from the issue of whiteness, which is true in the imagination of many and even subtly veiled within immigration policies and quota, and all of that, the election of Pope Francisco 1 (Francis 1), is a compromise position for two reasons.

The first is his Italian heritage. On this score, it may seem that within that conclave that the votes may not be going the way of the Italians and therefore, they shifted their votes in favor of one who has Italian blood, though of a different nationality.

The Second, his election defines him as non-European, therefore conveniently indicating that the church has shifted south to Latin America. But the claims of non-European at what level? At the level of nationality? Or at the level of genetic constitution and heritage?

Yes,  Pope Francis was born in Argentina of Italian migrant parents, his father a railway worker, but of course he speaks Italian, as we saw as reported in the Times Magazine of October 30th, 1978 about the election of the late Pope John Paul II, one Italian observer, concluded when he gave his speech in Italian on the October 1978 day, "he speaks Italian, he is one of us."

These issues apart, as I inferred the other time regarding the African Church, where the predominant black Cardinals reside or minister (apart from the Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Kodwo Turkson in the Roman Curia, a post that he may or may not get to keep again), the Vatican have through some appointments actually and sorry to say seemingly picked candidates that sometimes are at the lower rung of the totem pole.

Many African Cardinals are not known to be solid theologians, many even in very lucrative episcopal sees have not developed their administration/local curia well, hence devoid of organizational models that would test their ability to be good and efficient managers, some of their own baggage, and with all of these, many have no global profile at such critical times.

Some of these officials many even be well advertised in western media, but among their priests and nuns, and laity, what do they think about them? I know some Cardinals from the African continent that their priests would not drag an inch, and feel so disgusted with them. Therefore, it become ironic when the western media now horn these same "problematic" of Cardinals?  Certainly, they know something the rest of the African clergy, religious (nuns and brothers), and laity do not know.

This is not to deride any African Cardinal  because many are as qualified, if not even more qualified than their colleagues from elsewhere.  Sometimes, some of us laugh at the way the western media comes up with labels like the "Dolan of Africa," so why not Dolan be described as the "Onaiyekan of the Americas." Africans must always tag along, and the west must always hold their leash! See what happened to Cardinal Turkson in Rome, who were those putting the posters on the street, as if this was a political office for which he was campaigning? The reason is simple, do this kind of stunt events and get him roasted!

That stated, today is a historic day, and it seems the newly morphed Pope Francis 1 (my brother's name; and which Francis saint underlined this name remains conjectural at this time--is it St. Francis of Assisi, or St. Francis Xavier, the great Jesuit priest and evangelizing missioner in China and India (buried in Goa, Indian), would be a true servant and we look forward to how this break of dawn would vivify Africa, and help its growing faithful within the Catholic fold, and all her people feel the very essence of their humanity; the fulfilment of their persons as dignified beings and people, with a voice, with the ability to make the difference they are capable in the Church and in the world.

It's all about  white supremacist megalomania and pigmentational eugenics-
mental disorders and symptoms of the psychologically depraved.

But why 1800?

I would go back to 1492.

I would add, Gloria, that it seems axiomatic since 1800 that the lighter the skin color, regardless of region and heritage, the more acceptable and comfortable; the darker the skin hue, however, the more visually unpleasant and internally  uncomfortable.... Even this is true to men of faith. Behold, the verities of Blackness! We will be back to this discussion again, the next time a Pope is needed. Until then,  Adieu!!
