I read the posting below and had an energizing laughter. It points to what goes on as journalism these days.
A statement signed Monday by White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney, and posted on the White House website said; President Obama has invited the presidents of Sierra Leone, Malawi, Senegal and Cape Verde to join him next week Thursday for the summit. Going by Nigeria's leadership role in the continent, especially in the West African sub-region, the exclusion is a public repudiation of President Jonathan and a slap on the face of Nigeria and its claims to continental leadership as the giant of Africa. Let us look at the post from different perspectives'
There are almost 50 independent countries and territories in Africa. Only four heads of state and governments were invited. If not inviting Nigeria is a snub to Jonathan, does this follow that the absence of the over forty nations from the list "is a public repudiation" and a snub also? Is the author/s saying that South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, the entire North African countries, etc were also snubbed? How does US intend to strengthen democracy in Africa with only four nations or by beginning with just four countries? Could it not just be possible that the reason Mr. Obama invited these Heads of State (HOS) is because these countries need special attention?
President Jonathan is both HOS and Head of Government at the same time. Should Nigerians report with glee that the Nigerian HOS was snubbed? Especially when no proof was offered? Was the reason for the "snub" fact checked beyond anonymous "keen political observers"? I look forward to an editorial from Huhuonline.com on what it thinks of the snub. For a snub of Jonathan is a snub of Nigeria. I did not agree with the pardon of Mr. Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, and have written about it.
But I would also not rejoice when my HOS is snubbed.
Must Nigeria be invited to every US meeting on African affairs? Is Mr. Jonathan the American Secretary of State? Is Nigeria a colony of US? Or vice versa? The author seems to see Nigeria as one or the other.
And more to the point: should Nigeria accept all such invitations?
