Sultan's Call for Amnesty in Perspective
The call by the Sultan of Sokoto for amnesty to Boko Haram terrorists has understandably attracted a lot of commentary, a good deal of which is condemnatory of the call. Some of the comments expressed surprise that the Sultan, a man noted for moderate views on national issues, should be the one making such demand of the federal government, and interceding in such manner for people whose heinous actions cannot be logically explained.
Given what I heard from the Sultan, His Emminence Abubarkar Sa'ad III, in Uyo in February this year, during the opening session of the Nigerian Interiligious Council meeting, of which the Sultan is co-chair, I was not and cannot be surprised that our leader, the Sultan is asking the Federal Government to pardon the Boko Haram terrorists and open the jail houses for those already in detention for all the mass murders to go home.
During the opening session in Uyo, the moderator of the meeting asked people to feel free to ask questions and make comments on issues of faith in the country. A man walked up to the microphone and said that he wanted to know why Christians in the North were targets of attacks and murders and why churches were being bombed in the North. The Sultan was requested to address the concern expressed by the man. What the Sultan said to my hearing as I sat among the audience was benumbing to the say the least.
The Sultan said that it was not true that Christians were targeted, adding that the casualties of the violence in the North were both moslems and Christians. Then he dropped the bombshell which could not be hidden under any sophistry, that the bombing of churches in the North is perpetrated by Christians from other churches.
This statement by the Sultan at the last Nigerian Interreligious Council (NIREC) meeting in Uyo should provide the context within which to evaluate his call for amnesty to the Boko Haram terrorists. Bringing in this context will help members of the public to gauge the sincerity of the Sultan in the search for a solution to the mayhem in the North which has just claimed another 60 or more lives in the last 24 hours. With leaders like the Sultan, your guess is as good as mine how far we are from a solution to the problem.
