Was the Universe especially created for us?
Are the finely-tuned physical laws that surround us mere coincidence, or does it imply that a higher power created this world for various life-forms?
More and more scientists argue that the Universe appear as if it were specifically designed for the existence and well-being of Man. This phenomenon, which has attracted considerable scientific attention, has become known as the anthropic principle, from the Greek word anthropos , meaning "man."
The are various version of the anthropic principle.
Physicist Don Page has summarized the various forms of the anthropic principle that have been proposed over the years:
- Weak anthropic principle: "What we observe about the universe is restricted by the requirement of our existence as observers."
- Strong-weak anthropic principle: "In at least one world . . . of the many-worlds universe, life must develop."
- Strong anthropic principle: "The universe must have the properties for life to develop at some time within it."
- Final anthropic principle: "Intelligence must develop within the universe and then never die out."
"The anthropic principle refers to the recent discovery of a remarkable connection between the laws of nature and the existence of life.
It was previously thought that these two subjects have little in common. One can understand that the principles of biology would be related to the existence of life, but surely not the physical sciences. It is now known that such is not the case.
Another cosmic accident that makes life possible is that the proton is stable and does not decay into an antielectron. Experiments have shown that the proton lifetime is truly astronomical, much 246 Michio Kaku longer than the lifetime of the universe. For the purpose of creating stable DNA, protons must be stable for at least hundreds of millions of years.
Indeed, recent scientific discoveries have shown that the very existence of living creatures is intimately dependent on the details of the laws of physics, astronomy and cosmology," Professor Nathan Azier writes in his article "The Anthropic Principle" .
There are a number of physicists who support the theory, but there are also those who believe the anthropic principle is built on nothing but a series of cosmic coincidences.
Vera Kistiakowsky, a physicist at MIT claims the the fine-tuning of the Universe is a sign of a God.
"The exquisite order displayed by our scientific understanding of the physical world calls for the divine," Kistiakowsky said.
John Polkinghorne, a particle physicist who gave up his position at Cambridge University and became a priest of the Church of England writes that the universe is "not just 'any old world,' but it's special and finely tuned for life because it is the creation of a Creator who wills that it should be so."

As we all know life could not exist on our planet with the Sun hose heat and light are the primary source of all terestrial energy. Solar energy could support the Anthropic Principle case, some scientists suggest.
"If the nuclear force were only a few percent weaker, then a proton could not combine with a neutron to form a deuteron. If this were the case, no deuterons would be formed in the sun and hence no solar fuel would exist. As a result, the sun would not shine ("burn" ), but would merely be a cold ball of inert gas precluding the possibility of life on Earth.
If the nuclear force were only a few percent stronger, then each proton would rapidly combine with another proton with explosive results. If this were the case, the sun would soon explode and thus cease to "burn," once again precluding the possibility of life on Earth.
It is an extraordinary fact that the strength of the nuclear force just happens to lie in the narrow range in which neither of these two catastrophes occurs," Professor Nathan Azier wrote.
The same can be said about water, also a necessity for the existence of life as we know it.
Scientists know today that shortly after they were formed, all three planets (Earth, Venus and Mars) had large amounts of surface water.
"The deep channels that are observed today on the surface of Mars were carved out long ago by the copious fast-flowing Martian primordial surface waters.
Similarly, Venus was once covered by deep oceans which contained the equivalent of a layer of water three kilometers deep over its entire surface.
However, in the course of time, all surface waters on Mars and Venus disappeared. How did the Earth escape this catastrophe? The answer is that the Earth escaped this catastrophe by sheer "accident! "
The Earth just happens to be sufficiently distant from the sun that our surface water neither evaporated nor decomposed, as happened on Venus. Moreover, the Earth just happens to be sufficiently near the sun that the temperature remains high enough to prevent all the oceans from freezing permanently, as happened on Mars," Professor Nathan Azier explained in his interesting article.
There are many examples in nature that suggests the existence of a cosmic creator. Isaac Newton himself, who introduced the concept of immutable laws which guided the planets and stars without divine intervention, believed that the elegance of these laws pointed to the existence of God.
Nevertheless, not all scientist s do agree with this assumption. For example, Steven Weinberg, theoretical physicist and Nobel laureate in Physics is not convinced. "It is almost irresistible for humans to believe that we have some special relation to the universe, that human life is not just a more-or-less farcical outcome of a chain of accidents reaching back to the first three minutes, but that we were somehow built in from the beginning," Weinberg said.
