Killings Across Nigeria

A female Police DPO and her 7-year-old son has been shot dead at Daurawa, Maiduguri Road in Kano.  Temi as she is known was killed at about 7.30am on Tuesday. She was going to drop her son off in school.

Although details of the assassination are unclear, LEADERSHIP gathered that mother and child were killed by unknown gunmen who rode in a tricycle (Keke Napep).

It was also gathered that her husband is a retired Police officer.

The police have sealed off the area.

Meanwhile, Four people including an 80-year old village head and a six-year old boy were on Sunday night killed at Tapo village in Heipang District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State during an attack by yet to be identified gun men.

Just last weekend, two people were shot dead in Aware Local Government Area by unknown gunmen.

Three members of a family were said to have been shot by the attackers while the village head  Da Dung Bot Gwom was believed to have died from exhaustion while trying to escape from the gun men.

The gun men according to eye witnesses, stormed the village at about 11pm breaking into the residence of one Rwang Davou (71) killing  him, his 47-year old son, Pam Rwang Davou and his six-year old grandson, Martins Pam Rwang.

Pam's wife escaped with injuries and is now receiving treatment in hospital, according to eyewitnesses.

The village head who was not seen since the attack on Sunday was found dead by morning in the bush into which he was believed to have ran without any wound, fueling suspicion that he must have died from exhaustion.

The three family members were buried Monday while the body of the village head has been deposited in the mortuary for proper burial arrangements because of his status, according to a villager who spoke to Vanguard.

The burial was witnessed by the Chairman, Management Committee of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Mr. Emmanuel Loman and member representing the area in the state House of Assembly, Mrs. Kaneng Gyang Fulani.

The duo were said to have commiserated with the people urging them to be calm while the incident is investigated.

Spokesman of the Special Task Force in the state, Captain Salisu Mustapha, however,  said he was yet to be briefed on the incident when contacted.

Pandemonium erupted Monday when gunmen suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect laid siege on some schools in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, killing three teachers, injuring scores of others and students.

While the killing spree was ongoing in Maiduguri, reports said about six persons were killed by gunmen in two separate attacks in Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas of Plateau State on Sunday night.

But as the news of the attacks filtered into town, some schools were said to have quickly locked up their gates, while others hurriedly sent their teachers and pupils home to forestall any harm on them.

It was gathered that at about 9:10 a.m. around Ruwan Zafi area of the town, six suspected Boko Haram members laid ambush to Shehu Sanda Kyarimi Secondary School, and shot dead three teachers, whose identity were yet to be ascertained.

Three female students were also said to have sustained varying degrees of injuries arising from stray bullets, while two other teachers were also killed in Mafoni Primary and Secondary Schools.

Another account from some people in the town said the shooting occured at about 11:20 a.m. at Mafoni area, when members of the group stormed Ali Askira Primary School and shot one Mallam Abdullahi, before moving to Mafoni Day Secondary School, where they killed a female teacher, who was simply identified as Hajja Yagumsu.

Spokesman of the Joint Task Force (JTF), 'Operation Restore Order', Lt. Colonel Sagir Musa, said: "Information available to the JTF Operation Restore Order indicated that a teacher at Sanda Karami Secondary School, Ruwan Zafi, Customs General Area in Maiduguri metropolis one Malam Kachalla was shot dead on March 18 between 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. inside the school's premises by Boko Haram Terrorists. Three female students were also critically injured from bullet wounds and were rushed to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital by the JTF patrol attracted to the scene by hasty movement of people from Customs Market area."

Meanwhile, the incident at Tapo village of Barkin Ladi left three members of a family shot dead by the attackers, while an 80-year-old village head, Da Dung Bot Gwom, was believed to have died from exhaustion, while trying to escape from the gunmen.

But in Torok-Rim village of Riyom, children were the victims, as about two children between the ages of two and four years were killed and left in the pool of their blood after the assailants shot them at their residence before escaping.

Eyewitnesses in Riyom said the incident occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Sunday night, adding that four other persons were rushed to Vom Christian Hospital for treatment.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Samuel Dido, who confirmed the incident, said the four other persons were still unconscious at the hospital, with severe gunshots injuries.

Majority Leader of the state House of Assembly and member representing Riyom constituency in the state House of Assembly, Hon. Daniel Dem, who visited the scene, condemned the attack and called on the Special Task Force (STF) Commander, Major General Henry Ayoola, to redeploy the Sector 9 Commander, Colonel Jimoh, from the area for alleged complicity.

Dem said: "It is unfortunate that Jimoh would say women in the community attacked soldiers, which is not true. Now two children have been killed and four other persons are in critical condition in the hospital, we don't know how they will end up, yet Jimoh is busy accusing women of attacks on Soldiers. And I want to emphasise here that if we mean business about peace in Riyom, Colonel Jimoh should be replaced with somebody serious."

In Barkin Ladi, the gunmen, according to an eyewitness, stormed the village at about 11 p.m., broke into the residence of one Rwang Davou, aged 71, killing him, his 47-year-old son, Pam Rwang Davou, and his six-year old grandson, Martins Pam Rwang.

Pam's wife reportedly escaped with injuries, and was now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

The three family members were buried yesterday, while the body of the village head had been deposited in the mortuary for proper burial arrangements.

The burial of the three was witnessed by the Chairman, Management Committee of Barkin Ladi local government area, Mr. Emmanuel Loman, and member representing the area in the Assembly, Mrs. Kaneng Gyang Fulani, whose husband was once a victim of a similar attack.

However, Media Officer of the STF in the state, Captain Salisu Mustapha, said he was yet to be briefed on the killings.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chris Olakpe, confirmed the incident at Riyom, adding that the command in collaboration with the STF was investigating the incident.

"I have been to military operations at Dafur in the Sudan and also fought in Liberia but i've never experienced the kind of fighters in Boko Haram. Rebels usually want power but Boko Haram soldiers instead want death. They are resilient warriors. You could see a small boy in a Boko Haram unit fearlessly exchanging gun fire with us, as soldiers, sometimes killing and injuring some of our Nigerian soldiers. For example, we used to buy local food somewhere around here; but from nowhere Boko Haram militias trailed us and opened fire on us; killing two of our soldiers, whilst we only just luckily escaped with gun wounds. We believe Boko Haram militias have metaphysical rituals because the level of their ideology and commitment to their action have proved so, and as well, we've recovered charms related to acts of sorcery from their fallen members."

Black Monday of Mass Killings in Nigeria

At least five luxury buses hit by the explosions were completely destroyed.

Survivors told our correspondent that a suicide bomber drove a Volkswagen Golf car into the motor park, meant for passengers traveling to the southern part of the country, and rammed into a Lagos-bound bus which was driving out of the park with dozens of passengers on board.

The resulting explosion destroyed the vehicle and set fire to others within the vicinity. There were reports of a second explosion soon after the first one.

Witnesses said many passengers, park attendants and hawkers were caught in the explosions and were burnt beyond recognition, while many others sustained various degrees of injuries.

There were conflicting figures of the dead yesterday, with some witnesses saying as many as 60 people were killed.

President of the Ohaneze Ndigbo in Kano State, Chief Tobias Micheal Idika, who said he arrived at the scene immediately after the blast, put the casualty figure at over 60.

"I counted over 60 dead bodies and up till now bodies are being removed," he said.

'Confusion'

A female survivor Fatima Abdullahi, who was on a business trip to Port Harcourt, told Daily Trust she saw many bodies on the ground after the explosion.

"We could see people engulfed in flames inside other buses just before our own also caught fire," she said.

"The police later started evacuating the dead ones in carts and placing them in vehicles. All the passengers in the first bus perished, as well as other people on the ground, including the attendants that sold ticket to me."

She added that all her luggage and those of her would-be co-travellers were completely destroyed by the resulting fire.

Another witness, Ibrahim Bello, was quoted by Al Jazeera as saying: "I ran for my dear life and managed to get out of the park after the second blast. Many people are lying dead. See, my clothes are covered in blood."

A medic quoted in agency reports also said: "I saw three buses on fire. One of them was fully loaded with passengers waiting to leave the station at the time of the blasts."

A security source confirmed witness accounts of the incident, saying five luxury buses were burnt and scores of passengers killed.  He said at least 20 dead bodies had been counted while many others were trapped in the burning buses.

A mechanic, Tunde Kazeem, who works at the motor park, said the explosion was "followed by billows of black smoke and there was a lot of confusion with people rushing out of the motor park, some of them with blood on their clothes."

Another security official told Daily Trust that up to 80 passengers were on board one of the affected vehicles and that probably less than 10 of them survived.

He said the casualty level in the attack was the highest after the coordinated attacks in Kano on January 20 last year in which at least 180 people were killed.

Many of the victims were taken to various hospitals within Kano metropolis, including the Armed Forces Hospital, Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital (MMSH), Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) and others.

At the MMSH our correspondent counted four severely burnt bodies being moved to the morgue, while dozens of injured people, including women, were being treated at the accident and emergency wing. Many relations of the victims thronged the hospital crying. A neighbour to one of the victims told our correspondent that his friend, who was a mechanic, had gone to the garage to work when the incident occurred, leaving him with an injured leg.

Spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaib, said: "Rescuers and security personnel are yet to determine the source of explosions that occurred this evening at a motor park. While casualty figures are not available at the moment, the seriously injured have been taken to hospital and bodies evacuated."

No group has claimed responsibility for yesterday's attack up to the time of filing this report last night. But suspicion is likely to fall on the insurgent group that claimed previous deadly strikes in Kano.

Last year, an explosion of smaller magnitude at the same park left some people dead and others injured.

Meanwhile, security agents have cordoned off the scene of the attack, even as Daily Trust gathered that flames from the blast were yet to be put out by nightfall.

When contacted last night, spokesman for the Joint Task Force in Kano, Captain Ikedichi Iweha, said security agencies and emergency workers were still battling to put out the fire at the scene and evacuate remaining victims to hospital.

He said the casualty figure could only be released after he got figures from hospitals where the affected persons were taken to. "We have not been able to go round the hospitals to count the people affected, but the figure is not as high as people are speculating," he said.

Jonathan condemns blasts

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has condemned, in strong terms, the blasts in Kano.

In a statement, Presidential spokesman Reuben Abati quoted the president as saying the barbaric incident would not deter the Federal Government from its strong-willed determination to overcome those who do not mean well for the nation.

He said that the Federal Government would not be stampeded into abandoning its unrelenting war against terrorists in the country. The president reassured Nigerians and foreigners in the country that government would do the needful to ensure the safety of lives and property.

He said that government would continue to collaborate with local and international partners and stakeholders to check the menace of terrorism.

Mass Killings in Nigeria

At least 20 people have been killed in a series of explosions at a bus station in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, witnesses say.

Several buses were destroyed in the Sabon Gari area of the city, home to a large population of Christians from the south of the country.

Kano is the largest city in the mainly Muslim north of Nigeria. No group has said it carried out the blasts but Islamist militants from Boko Haram have attacked Kano several times.

One eye witness told the BBC's Hausa service that he had seen 20 bodies after the blasts.

Earlier this month, another militant Islamist organisation, Ansaru, claimed to have killed seven foreign hostages seized in the northern state of Bauchi in February.

According to AFP reports, five explosions at a bus park in northern Nigeria's main city of Kano killed at least 25 people on Monday in an area where Islamist sect Boko Haram is waging an insurgency against the government, a Reuters reporter who counted the bodies said.

The blasts destroyed several buses in the Sabon Gari area of Kano, an area mostly inhabited by immigrants from Nigeria's largely Christian south, the Reuters witness said. Military and police cordoned off the area after the blasts.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Boko Haram, which frequently has attacked the city, is a prime suspect.

"I ran for my dear life and managed to get out of the park after the second blast. Many people are lying dead. See, my clothes are covered in blood," said Ibrahim Bello, holding up a blood-soaked shirt.

The attacks came as an audio tape emerged of a man saying he was the father of a family of seven French tourists kidnapped by Boko Haram militants. On the tape, he read out a threat by them to increase kidnappings and suicide bombings in Cameroon if authorities there detain more of the group's followers.

Joint Task Force sources told SaharaReporters that the explosion went off about 6:00 PM Nigerian time though no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
