Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Blood Of The Natives

do we know enough about this episode not to say the nigerian army used undue force, used "collateral damage" excuses that resulted in excessive civilian deaths? do we know if the deaths were justified or not?
as a parallel, about which we know more, more than a thousand palestinians were killed in gaza, under similar circumstances. the death ration between israelis and palestinians was about 100 to one, and the excuse given by the israeli military was similar to what you are mentioning below.
maybe we will not know well what happened, but i would want to hear from the villagers before deciding what was right or wrong. i really would worry that the army, resentful and angry at being opposed, would have let the civilians die rather than back off.

I am yet to see why the two literary responses to the Odi massacre i have read, including this one, are not able  to address the complete reality of the situation.

What makes officialdom 'decrepit' in this instance, as Chidi claims?

In terms of the definite information currently available, what do you think the soldiers did wrong  or did not do right in connection with dislodging Boko Haram terrorists from their stronghold in the town, following on the heels of killings of soldiers by Boko Haram from that base  and a report  that the terrorists  have  taken over the outlying rural areas in Borno state?

The sullen sky
Spat,
Fire rained
Onto the land of Baga.

Desolation,
Coven of carnivores.
Burned bodies
Begged to be buried.

Blood of the natives
Flowed
Through their farmlands,
Through their fish farms,
Through the domains of their deities.

The scanty survivors of Baga
Like the scanty survivors of Odi
Are now refugees.

Mouthpieces of officialdom
Mount
The decrepit dais,
Mouthing sympathies.
