Launch Event for Black British Academics at the 7th Colloquium on Ethnic Relations: July 25th

Dear Members,

Mark the date in your diary: Thursday July 25. The Place: Royal Docks Business School, University of East London, Docklands. The 7th Colloquium on Ethnic Relations Conference with the theme 'Exploring the Lived Experience of Ethnicities' will take place from 9.30pm (registration) with a great line-up of thought-provoking presentations (full details to follow in due course). Following the conference, the launch event for Black British Academics will take place. It will take the form of a brief welcome by the founder followed by an informal discussion where members will be invited to offer feedback on the structure, aims and objectives of the network and contribute ideas. This discussion is also designed as an opportunity for members who are working on special projects or planned research pitching for collaboration. The launch event should above all be regarded as an opportunity for members to meet, interact, build relationships and have an enjoyable social evening.

The colloquium is an annual event hosted by the BAME Network at the Royal Docks Business School which is organised by BBA member Dr Gil Robinson, to whom we are extremely grateful for graciously allowing the launch event to be integrated with the colloquium. A full review of the colloquium last year can be found here: http://deborahgabriel.com/2012/07/07/challenging-times-for-black-academics-in-the-uk/ .

New: Featured Members Profile on the Website

A featured members box has been added to the sidebar of the website. Whilst the directory provides an opportunity for site visitors to browse and search for academics by discipline, the featured members's box throws the spotlight on an individual member, helping to promote greater levels of engagement with the wider public. It also has the added benefit of creating a sense of familiarity between members since many of us have not met (yet)! The first member to be profiled (my choice) is Connis St Louis, who is greatly admired for her sterling contribution and unrivalled success within my own field of media and communication. Please take a moment to view the box here:http://blackbritishacademics.co.uk/about/ to the right of the page. The featured member's box will be changed on a weekly basis so please can you all email a short bio of yourselves of up to 90 words if you do not have a comprehensive profile on your website URL.

New: Member's Blogs

The first member's blog by Fasil Demsash from the University of York has been published on the website. The blog is a great way to introduce yourself to other members and the wider public and a platform for you to comment on anything from the highs and lows of your role, to achievements, awards, developments in your discipline, outside interests and hobbies or any academic activities that you are involved in that you wish to publicise. To view the latest blog posts visit: http://blackbritishacademics.co.uk/blog/ You can also subscribe to the blog via feedburner here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/BlackBritishAcademics To submit a blog post click here: http://blackbritishacademics.co.uk/submit-news/

Recommend a Member

Black British Academics is 23 days old and we currently have 26 members. Membership is growing at a steady pace and feedback from a variety of quarters has been very positive. The aim is to recruit 50 members by July, which could easily be achieved if every member was to introduce an academic to the network. It could be a colleague, a masters student that you teach or PhD student that you supervise, or a friend at another university. All you need to do is forward a link to the website so that they can have a browse and decide if they wish to come on board. The URL of the website is: http://blackbritishacademics.co.uk/  (please save to your favourites). Please also remember that we now have a dedicated undergraduate site that includes their own directory and a new Undergraduate Coordinator Rochelle Walker: http://blackbritishacademics.co.uk/undergraduates/welcome/ , so you can also invite undergraduates to join.

Thanks and Best Wishes
Deborah Gabriel
