Dear Professor Okafor:
Thank you very much for your great and moving tribute: very truly, a great tree has fallen! In Ghana, our elders in Akan would have wailed and loudly exclaimed at the same time: "Odupon atutu"!
Your snow metaphor will delight my 93-year old mother, who visited us in Indiana from Ghana at the age of 88. When she saw her first snow, she called our oldest son (his grandson) to take a cup, fetch some of the snow to bring for her to taste. She wanted to know what it tasted like! She said to her grandson: "It is good that this useless thing does not fall on our land. It is, after all, tasteless!"
Certainly, the great mask will rise higher, higher and higher.
Hopefully, with your permission, I can quote "freely" from your magnificent tribute, to be used in the chapter on Professor Chinua in my forthcoming memoir (with an acknowledgment, of course!). After several brothers and sisters read that loaded chapter, they may sigh: So, we are not the only ones, who knew that great Sage and Indomitable Spirit who, like his own mother, was also "the strong, silent type" (or "a silent bullet"), who was born at Nnobi in 1930 but laid to rest at nearby Ogidi in 2013. What an interesting and historic irony!
A.B. Assensoh.
