PRESS RELEASE
Professor Osaghae, Igbinedion Vice-Chancellor delivers Lead City University Distinguished Lecture
On Thursday 6th of June 2013 beginning from 3:30pm, distinguished political scientist and comparativist, Professor Eghosa Osaghae who is also the Vice-Chancellor Igbinedion University, Benin, will deliver the 2013 Lead City University's Faculty of Social Sciences and Entrepreneurial Studies distinguished lecture, at the University's International Conference Centre.
Osaghae, a world acclaimed authority on Federalism and Inter-Ethnic Relations will speak to the topic "The Essentials of Nigeria's Survival". The lecture acquires salience and tropicality in the light of several contemporary challenges to the Nigerian nation state as well as repeated calls on the Jonathan administration to convoke a national conference in which the nationalities which make up Nigeria can re-negotiate and re-compact the nation. These challenges also include clashes between Fundamentalist, Islamic faithfuls advocating a sharia theocracy and worshipers of other faiths as well as insurgent groups terrorizing parts of the country with backing from foreign terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda. Indeed the United States recently offered a ransom of 7m dollars for any person or group of persons who can offer useful information that will help to track down the Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, underlining national and international interest in Nigeria's war against religious terror.
Osaghae a prolific author, essayist, public intellectual and writer of over a hundred publications will dissect these issues with a view to providing a road map that will take Nigeria out of the current miasma and stave off dooms day predictions about the imminent breakup of the country. Expected to attract a wide circle of intellectuals, policy makers and scholars; the distinguished lecture will be chaired by emeritus Professor of political science and renowned scholar of civil military relations, Bayo Adekanye. It will be recalled that the distinguished Faculty of Social Sciences and Entrepreneurial Studies, Lead City University lecture was flagged off last year by Professor Toyin Falola, Award winning Professor of African History and globally acclaimed scholar based at the University of Texas at Austin. Falola gave a topical lecture on Social Movements which offered fresh conceptual and historical insights into contemporary challenges. Osagahe's lecture follows in this tradition of inviting world acclaimed scholars to reflect on contemporary travails and crises which perplex mankind in our corner of the globe.
The general public is hereby invited.
