USA Africa Dialogue Series - Re: Swedish Peace keeping troops for Mali

The Afro-Swedish innovator of the "nigger cake," as some in the media dubbed it, stated that the project was supposed to call attention to "clitorectomies" (female genital cutting). But when I listened to him I recall thinking that he didn't have much knowledge of genital cutting or stereotypical images of Black people. I suppose I might call him an accidental racist. And, whatever his aims, it doesn't necessarily tell us what was going on in the heads of the white female Swedish minister who cut the cake or the other white participants in the room (I don't recall seeing any other black participants). To be fair, I also recall some nervous giggling in the vicinity suggesting that at least some of the observers were uncomfortable with the bizarre display. But, then again, political art is frequently shocking. Another possible take-away calls to mind a popular phrase among our tormentors (drill instructors) during my Marine Corps days--"good intention, poor execution." kzs

Of relevance: African Union proposes an emergency military force (some kind of rapid reaction force. Let's hope that words will be translated into actions...
