Fascinating. For those who don't know, Dr. Cole is a highly celebrated African American anthropologist and a student of Melville Herskovits (Herskovits authored the important work Myth of the Negro Past. "Chief" Cole is currently heading up the National Museum of African Art that is hosting the event you posted. African chieftaincy has been cheapened since at least the colonial era, but it would probably be good to know more details of this event before dismissing it. Chiefs nowadays live abroad and sometimes have mundane jobs in western countries, they dont all have palaces. The Asante (Ashanti) of Ghana, for example, innovated something in the 80s called nkosuohene ("development chief"), often bestowed on foreigners who, it is hoped, will lend material support village development. Some Ghanaians decry this as an example of "cheapened" institutions, others disagree. I think its best to evaluate each enstoolment/installment on a case-by-case basis. My Ghanaian friend and colleague, George Bob-Milliar, wrote a paper on the nkosuohene.
