The Nobel prize for peace is awarded to recipients for noble deeds and other contribution that advance peace and justice (including preventing/ending wars and other violent conflicts). It is not clear that recipients’ ignoble deeds that caused or advanced wars and injustice among others count against them, and if so, to what extent. This explains (unsatisfactorily to many) the award of the prize to such recipients as Henry Kissinger and Fredrik Willem de Klerk among others. It bears reminding that the award was not always accepted by an awardee. North Vietnams’ Le Duc Tho for example, rejected the award of the prize he shared with Henry Kissinger in 1973. His reason was that his country was not yet at peace. Vladimir Putin? Why not. He was a peace maker, an effective one this past week. Then again, would he accept if he is nominated and the prize was awarded to him?
