NnaEmeka Meribe Well, you can say what you want, the guy has become (in)famous. A google search on his name will reveal just that. On a serious note, however, there are issues this has thrown up: The hulabaloo about his 'research' in the West is not so much about the uselessness of the 'research' but because it touched on one of the many souls of modern libralism: Gayism. The gay lobby group has become so powerful that have also sponsored previous 'useless' studies that justify 'gayism'. Armed with such phoney research and constructing any case against them as human rights abuse or better put discrimination, it has now become politically incorrect to say anything homosexuality. Ironically, homosexuals can say what they like about hetrosexuals and go free. The second isue is science and technology reporting in Nigeria. Why should journalists report every claim as truth? There is a bit of intellectial laziness here. An intelligent journalist should know when someone is talking crap. And even if he feels the person isnt saying crap he should be able to ask other scientists in the same field their views and with that a new angle to the story might emerge. We-all journalists in Nigeria- appear to be guilty here. That is why most press releases are published without extra work on them. Most press releases, in fact, should be leads to bigger stories. Third point is the unneccessary description of the 'researcher' as a PART TIME student by UNILAG. The problem with our universities is that they treat part time students as second class citizens but this should not be so. The irony is that in Nigeria the fees of part time students is even higher than that of regular students. Besides, many part time students are far more intelligent than regular students. Pray! If that guy had made a ground breaking finding would UNILAG have dismissively described him as a PART TIME student? It is wrong. In other climes there is no dichotomy between regular and part time students. They are all students.

You touch on very serious points.  Promoting or negating homosexuality with lies and pseudo science is wrong on both sides!  Two everything is debased in Nigeria and there is collective intellectual laziness and you see this in all professions - just name it.  All institutions are debased and we are simply a group of depraved and debased people so do not single out journalism, because it is very good company with politics, law, and medicine!  Lastly, University of Lagos should be ashamed of itself for making a distinction between full time and part time students.  In short it offers a two tier education one genuine and the other fake?  The education industry is about to fall because it too is debased!  IBK

DISCLAIMER

Our attention has been drawn to a publication containing research purportedly written by one of the Part Time Postgraduate Diploma Students in the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Lagos - Stanley Amalaha, titled "Science of Gay Marriage" in THISDAY Newspapers of 5th September, 2013 and on several blogs on the Internet.

The University of Lagos writes to dissociate itself in its entirety from the actions, publications and research of this individual. We further state, for the avoidance of doubt, that his publication has nothing to do with his programme and has no relationship to his studentship of the University. Indeed our postgraduate diploma students ordinarily only take conversion courses to improve their capability for the chosen specialization and do not undertake research. The case of the writer who has a background in Education (Chemistry) is not different.

Although the University is a market place of different views and ideas, its platform should not be used for the propagation of ill-conceived, unsubstantiated and ill-digested opinions that have no basis in rigorous empirical research. The University of Lagos, which stands for excellence in teaching and research, cannot and should not be associated with such puerile and pseudo-scientific postulations.

The University reaffirms its mission, which is to be a top-class institution for the pursuit of excellence in knowledge through learning and research as well as in character and service to humanity.

I would like to thank Bolaji for sending along the email from the Unilag lecturer in response to the vexatious ThisDay piece. I'm surprised, however, that Bolaji or anyone else believes that "The response speaks for itself," because IT DOESN'T. Sam!

I would have expected the Unilag VC, one of the Deans, the Head of Department, or someone from the Public Relations Dept. to come out fuming and firing on all cylinders, instead of the apparent laxity with which VC Bello is treating this matter. Does anyone at Unilag truly understand the enormity of the damage this report has already caused them--in the age of the Internet? Telling the world that Mr. Amalaha is an "ASPIRING Scientist" who has been on the master's degree program for donkey years actually further damages the university and portrays it as an unserious academic charade. Some "professors" were quoted in the ThisDay article. Are these Unilag lecturers? Will the VC please disown them as well?

Right now I don't know who to hit more with my bulala: the Nobel laureate-in-waiting or his "erudite" lecturers who have been goading him on for eight years? Or, the ba kwo mi VC? Please, Bolaji call your friend and tell him to sit up and do his job.. or else...including bringing back the Moshood Abiola name change!
