Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Zimbabwe:Crushing Black Imperialism

Your observations on the above topic are not peculiar to Zimbabwe but common to all African nations which share common historical background of colonialism. But the solution is not in abandoning politics as panacea to socioeconomic woes because that is not possible. In African and indeed the entire world politics is the major determinant of how the rest of the games , be it social, economic, development, or even cultural are played. Though the scope and dimensions differ from country to country.

Neither does it Lie in diminishing the central powers of government because it has it's own numerous disadvantages as the Nigeria's first republic experience has shown or the experience of defunct Yugoslavia.

The solutions lies in advocacy and extensive campaign by those in academic and NGOs to educate the people of Africa, (the common people in the street) of the meaning and purpose of government.

In African, Government is one huge myth. Historical backgrounds of contemporary African States have presented government as one almighty super structure with unsurmountable powers ( not to be challenged in any way) capable of doing all things. Even in areas were people can work together to achieve common good, every body fold hands and wait for government to deliver the el dorado democracy dividend.

Rather than Government becoming one of the institutions of the people, through which there common goals and aspirations could be achieved, It became the grand master. The big Boss sitting at the centre of the conquered empire and
determining everything.

Governments in Africa are like army of occupation dominating and exploiting the human and material resources of the occupied, regardless of who sits at the centre of the empire. Its people, are its subjects, conquered and finished, physically and psychologically. Government is no longer made for the people but the people for government.

The way out as mentioned earlier is in demystification of government, advocacy, mobilisation and motivation of people to take back that which rightly belong to them, their institution through which law and order are maintained and their goals, aspirations and God given potentials are harmonized and pursued.

The people must know that government is there own and the role occupants, elected or appointed are there to serve and are accountable for services rendered. Africans must start holding politicians accountable for there actions while in office. Like power, accountability is hardly given but wrestled. Except demanded and ready to fight over it , politicians will never be accountable for there services and as long as any role occupant knows that he is not accountable to any body, the possibility of behaving responsibly is very slim.

I understand that the British Empire was founded upon the plunder of treasures through the use of arms against other weaker countries. Its expansion was based on the tacit approval by the British monarchy at that time, on the use of violence and subjugation of natives for profit, under the pretext of spreading Protestantism: Africans were deceived.

Funny enough, we are now aware, that even though the liberation struggles in Africa were based on the moral values of the attainment of freedom and liberty for black Africans, it has turned out in most cases, that this was merely a historical social transformation process, where a black "enlightened" elite, backed by indigenous armies of freedom fighters, sought to depose the colonialist- and replace them. This was under the pretext of fighting imperialism but the motive was, and has remained, the attainment economic advantage for that elite. Africans were, once again, deceived.

Just as the British used Protestantism to gain economic advantage over black Africans, so has liberation struggle politics been used by the black elite imperialist class, to gain economic advantage over the black African masses. Read More
