The Igbo Studies Association (ISA) invites scholars and professionals working on all aspects of studies on the Igbo of southern Nigeria for its next annual international conference to be held from May 22-24, 2014 at The Dominican University, River Forest (near Chicago), Illinois, USA. The leadership and governance questions have become imperative, if not urgent, in light of profound changes in recent decades and the serious challenges of leadership confronting the Igbo and Igbo diaspora at the various intersections of family, kinship, village, intra and interethnic relations, national leadership. Other knotty issues mirror the complexities of globalization, migrations, gender, science, technology, and socioeconomic and political development. The 2014 conference will examine the general theme: Ochịchị: Igbo Leadership – past, present and future – and its congruencies in relation to the Igbo within their homeland, within the Nigerian polity, and in the context of the globalized world. We welcome both local and international experts, activists, and intellectuals at all stages in their careers to facilitate discussion and dialogue across disciplines and between scholars and professionals.
For the panels and individual paper proposals, Ochịchị: Igbo Leadership – past, present and future shall be conceptualized in the broadest possible ways so as to include history, culture, development, women, men, migration, childhood, and Igbo diaspora communities in historic and contemporary contexts. We assume that the Igbo leadership question is intertwined with major national and global developments in interesting but unique ways, and that participants will query these connections, especially on how the question of leadership in Igboland and among Igbo outside their homeland have influenced and have been influenced by the world around them in a constant flux.
Panels will engage with a variety of topics on:
- History, politics, economics
- Religion and religious leaders
- Fundamentalism, war and peace making
- Igbo philosophy of leadership
- Leadership among the youth
- Morality and immorality in Igbo leadership
- Intellectuals and ideological leadership
- Achebeism and the leadership question
- National leadership and the Igbo question
- Igbo diaspora communities
- Family, kinship, village
- Corruption and self interest
- Language, Law, Scientific expressions
- Environment, philosophy, development and human rights
- Education, sports, development intervention
- Dislocation, resilience and new social formations
- Literature, film, and the visual arts
- Back to the future: Igbo leadership in the twenty-first century
Please include the following in your proposal: your name, current position and institutional affiliation, paper title, abstract (150 words maximum), your mailing address, email, phone and fax number. You will be notified on the status of your submission and other program details by email. Selected papers will be considered for publication and inclusion in a post-conference edited book. Thus, papers should be written as if they are being prepared for publication. We prefer presentations in English. However, those who would like to present in the Igbo language should make translations of their papers available in English. Participants are responsible for the conference fee and their travel and lodging costs. It is important that those who will require US visas submit their proposals and completed paper early since they will need them for the visa interviews.
