Subject: Re: USA Africa Dialogue Series - Police Barricade Unical Gate, Stop ASUU 'City Walk' in Calabar

The NTA Tuesday night program of 29th October 2013 focused on the ASUU strike was quite illuminating. Four panelist were on hand to discuss the way forward. Of the four, two actually captured my attention- Saudatu Mahdi of WRAPA.and Senator Adeyeye of the National Assembly. In spite of the attacks on the Senator who incidentally hails form my state, I felt a sense of pride to have him take the government at all levels to the cleaners on the profligacy which have attended governance. He belongs to the rare gem of present day Nigerian politicians who agree with Nigerians that the reward system is lopsided in favor of the political elites and require redress. My only worry is that if he advocates a five percent deduction from the income of all categories of salary earners, most low income earners will contribute more by way of the percentage of their income that would be forfeited. Again, how do we get the non-salaried populace to contribute their own share.

As for the Executive Secretary of WRAPA (unfortunately, I did not join the program early enough to know the full meaning of the acronym), she stole the show with her incisive analysis and contributions. To me, she came to the program with a clear mind, unlike the SSA on Youth and Student Matters and the Chairman of National Examination Council, who came to exhibit how a paid agent of government should behave even at the detriment of the parents and students whose interest they claim to be serving. The truth is that the ASUU strike is unfortunately not about blowing out whatever ones master blows into the trumpet, but saying it exactly the way it is like Senator Adeyeye, Saudatu Mahdi and even the anchor person, Cyril Stober did. That is the way crises are managed. Proffer cogent solutions. Do not just engage in sarcastic beg game like in the Yoruba legend of ' let us beg the wicked to develop his township'. In truth, if ASUU calls off the strike today and government refuses to fulfill its own part of the bargain, it is this same set of government jobbers who will cry foul if ASUU dares to complain.

All said, as a member of the ASUU, I like to seize the opportunity of my membership of this forum, to which I know that several of ASUU members belong, to appeal to our leaders to consider the several appeals made by well meaning Nigerians to suspend the strike actions bearing in mind that if the decay, which the SSA TO THE PRESIDENT ON YOUTH AND STUDENT MATTERS represents (with his grammatical blunders on National/International television) remains unaddressed, not only posterity but also the whole nation would have seen that we have done our level best.

May I also seize this opportunity to correct the impression created by Senator Adeyeye on the number of tertiary institutions in Osun State. At the federal level, we have the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife and the Federal Polytechnic, Ede. THERE IS ONLY ONE STATE UNIVERSITY WITH SIX CAMPUSES. Unfortunately, the present government in the state has a body language that suggests that it prefers the jointly owned LADOKE AKINTOLA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY, OGBBOMOSO to its own fully owned OSUN STATE UNIVERSITY. We also have two Colleges of Education and two Polytechnics owned by the state. These are in addition to privately owned Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

"Hundreds of heavily armed police drafted from formations around Calabar, the Cross River State capital on Monday barricaded the main gate and other entrances to the University of Calabar to stop members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU from carrying out a planned city walk.

The police, led by an Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, , Nnange Itam took over the entrances to the University of Calabar as early as 6am to carry out what they called order from above.
"We have instructions to stop the lecturers from marching out of the university premises to the city because they could be attacked by their students who are angry over the prolonged strike and the market women who the other day protested to express their anger with the teachers" Itam told CrossRiverWatch."
