Since the last three weeks, praises, accolades, and appreciations have
tumbled down from the high and mighty in celebration of the 60th birthday of
the eminent Professor of Africa and African History, Professor Oloruntoyin
Omoyeni Falola. Some of these are so touching and deep that one cannot but
shed tears of joy, as not many people get appreciated in their life-time.
Below is a note by Professor Ola-Rotimi Ajayi, a Professor of Political Science
and Vice-Chancellor of Landmark University, Nigeria who testifies to the
impact of Professor Falola on his career path.
"My first encounter with Professor Falola was between 1993 and 1994, when
as a young Assistant Lecturer, I found myself at the UT at Austin on the
platform of the Fulbright Fellowship. Even though I was in the Department of
Government, I found in Professor Falola's History Department a second home
such that on returning to Nigeria, I ended with a Doctorate from a History
Department. In a nutshell, I became a beneficiary of Prof's multidisciplinary
talent. Thank you Sir for the love, care and hospitality you showered on me
and indeed all that came your way. Thank you for your investment in Human
Capital, irrespective of age, ethnic background or academic status. Through
your tutelage, our presence was registered in credible conferences and
publication outlets. Of a truth the seeds you sowed have germinated. They are
bringing forth fruits and I know it will please God to bestow on you long life to
partake of your rewards. In the next sixty years, we shall continue to draw
from this fountain of wisdom and milk of human kindness. To be sure,
humanity will not forget in a hurry that you traversed the length and breadth of
this world doing good. Congratulations Sir.
Professor Ola-Rotimi Ajayi Vice-chancellor Landmark University Omuaran, Kwara State Nigeria.
